- Environment-sensitive fluorescent probes are specially designed dyes that change fluorescence intensity (fluorogenic dyes) or colour (e.g. solvatochromic dyes) in response to a change in polarity, viscosity and/or molecular order of their microenvironment. In general, they are ‘push-pull’ dyes that undergo intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) in the excited state. Intramolecular proton transfer in the excited state (ESIPT) is another fluorescence mechanism which results in long Stokes’ shifts and the possibility of dual emission, the ratios of which are sensitive to the local environment.- These two fluorescence mechanisms will be used to design solvatochromic dyes. The French team will study ICT dyes whereas Australian team will focus on ESIPT dyes. Particularly, the structure of the ESIPT dyes will be based on natural products isolated from sponges and modified by hemisynthesis or by
- _de-novo_ synthesis. Isolation and characterization of new natural fluorophores from collected sponges will also be done. In France, ICT dyes will be built by a new and efficient key reaction allowing an easy combination of electron-donor and acceptor moieties.
