**Responsibilities**:
UN Environment Programme (Energy and Climate Branch) hosts the International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) ) to catalyse the collection, reconciliation and integration of empirically-based, near-real-time methane emissions data to provide unprecedented climate transparency and provide the information needed to dramatically reduce this powerful greenhouse gas.

UNEP’s IMEO aims to provide open, reliable, and actionable data to the individuals who have the agency to reduce the 150 million metric tonnes of methane emissions needed by 2030. UNEP’s IMEO serves the rapidly growing ecosystem of governments, companies, investors, researchers, NGOs and other entities engaging in this crucial climate challenge.

UNEP’s IMEO's theory of change is to deliver a step-change improvement across research, reporting and regulation and connecting this information to the individuals who have agency to reduce emissions. Through insights and partnerships with companies, governments, and civil society, UNEP’s IMEO fosters global methane emissions reductions at the scale and speed consistent with the Paris Agreement. In this regard, UNEP’s IMEO serves as a key implementing partner of the Global Methane Pledge, a US-EU-led effort gathering 150 countries committed to reducing global methane emissions by 30 per cent by 2030.

The consultant will support IMEO’s implementation workstream, which is responsible for engaging countries on methane emissions and building capacity among these stakeholders to address these emissions.

In particular, the consultant will be expected to:

- Support the development of material to provide information to countries on methane emissions opportunities, including memos, briefing notes, presentations, etc.
- Support the drafting of best practices and guidance to assist countries on methane mitigation opportunities, notably related to the Methane Alert and Response System
- Provide coordination and logístical support for the organization of meetings, trainings, and other events
- Maintain updated information and tracking on ongoing engagements with government and other related experts stakeholders
- Develop and share updates on country engagement internally and externally as necessary
- Conduct research and analysis as needed regarding country-level methane opportunities, challenges, and priorities
- Attend meetings, workshops, events, etc. and support drafting of meeting summaries and action items, including tracking follow-up activities
- Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure alignment of ongoing in-country activities
- Identify opportunities for collaboration and work with stakeholders to implement collaborative priorities

Performance indicators will be the following:

- The effectiveness and management of the work
- Speediness and quality of outputs prepared
- Timeliness and professionality of communications with UNEP staff and consultants, as well as external partners

The consultant will in close consultation with the UN Environment Programme Paris Office. The outputs need to be accepted by the UNEP to be considered satisfactory.

Qualifications/special skills

- Education: Advanced degree in energy/environment, policy, or a related field
- Experience: At least two years of experience working on climate issues, particularly related to the energy sector. Experience with methane emissions is desirable.
- Communication: Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
- Teamwork: Works collaboratively with colleagues in the IMEO team to achieve organizational goals; is willing to learn from others; Supports and acts following final group decision, even when such decisions may not entirely reflect own position.
- Planning & Organizing: Ability to plan, prioritize and deliver tasks effectively and on time.

- Languages: Be fluent in written and spoken English. Other languages are useful.
