The Translator 3 role is responsible for reviewing translated texts for proper use of language, including grammar, terminology and syntax. Its intent is to verify the accuracy of translations with respect to their corresponding source texts, as well as to ensure the doctrinal verity of translations. The primary objective of this role is to ensure that final translations completely, fluently and culturally appropriately convey the original meaning of the English text for the target audience.
- Edits, reviews and proofreads translations completed by internal and external translation providers to ensure that the meaning of the original English has been transferred correctly, completely and consistently.
- This includes verifying correct meaning, terminology, grammar, fluency and style and making corrections as necessary.
- Controls quality of post-production materials including but not limited to Galley and Print Proofs, Video Quality Check (VQC), and In-Context Review (ICR).
- Evaluates the linguistic quality of translation and interpretation work completed by internal and external resources for the purposes of providing linguistic feedback and training to translation providers.
- Maintains linguistic tools and resources, including translation memories, glossaries, and style guides, for the assigned language.
- Acts as a linguistic or cultural consultant for the assigned language.
- Other duties as assigned by the Language Supervisor. (This may include interpreting for seminars, interviews, phone calls, etc. Additional approval and certification are required to interpret for General Conference, CES Firesides and General Authority visits.)
- Bachelor's degree (preferably in linguistics, translation or a related field) or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience with an advanced degree of expertise (typically seen in a professional translator with at least 8 years of experience) in the assigned language and skill in writing, vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and syntax of the assigned language; preference given to native language speakers who meet other qualifications.
- Ability to provide targeted feedback on translation performance to internal and external translation providers with a commitment to deliver high-quality, publication-ready translations.
- Mastery of spoken and written English and excellent knowledge of vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and syntax.
- Ability to navigate through translation and business management tools, web interfaces, reading briefs and instructions, including entering data and downloading and uploading files.
- Ability to work under tight deadlines and under sometimes stressful situations. Strong interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to provide regular updates on task status to supervisors and other project stakeholders.
- Intermediate computer skills, including familiarity with operating systems and Microsoft Office.
- Knowledge of Church doctrine, policies and ecclesiastical organization.Advanced knowledge of computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools preferred.
- Additional approval and an internal certification are required to interpret for General Conference, CES Firesides and General Authority visits.
