**Context**

Autoimmune diabetes,** **or Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is one of the most prevalent Immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs) and an incurable chronic debilitating disease resulting from the irreversible loss of insulin-secreting cells treated by daily insulin administration. In a seminal paper, we have recently demonstrated that electrostimulation of the pancreatic nerve inhibits T1D in diabetes-prone mice. However, translating this approach in human is challenging due to the complexity of neural anatomy of the pancreatic region compared to mice.

The aim to this project is therefore to develop a flexible microelectrode array adapted to spinal cord stimulation (SCS) in mice, as the only relevant T1D animal model
- to provide the proof-of-concept that SCS can be used as new treatment for T1D.

**Research program**
- The design of the microelectrode arrays and their fabrication using standard microfabrication techniques (chemical vapor deposition, photolithography, reactive ion etching )
- The development and optimization of the packaging of such implantable devices and their characterization.

- David MoreauThe Department of Bioelectronics (BEL) is located on the Campus Provence campus of the École des Mines de Saint-Étienne (EMSE), in the outskirts of Marseille. The founding vision of BEL was to create “an internationally renowned Department in which bioelectronic technologies are generated through better understanding and control of the electronics/tissue interface, and which provides outstanding education opportunities in this rapidly evolving field”. The approach that was chosen was to build a mixed team of faculty with backgrounds in physical sciences/engineering and in life sciences within the same department, in order to foster the intimate integration of these two disciplines.
