**Description du sujet**:
The scientific work carried out in this thesis will be a significant contribution by the IRDL Institute for UPWEARS. The thesis can be organized across 3 main tasks:
Mechanical properties of the fibres, matrices, coated yarns and fabrics: AFM in Peak Force mode and nanoindentation will be carried out to obtain local stiffness mapping of the different products. In addition, tensile tests will be carried out. Specific environmental coupling with monitoring of temperature and humidity will help measure changes in mechanical properties with changes in environmental conditions and ageing.
Development of specific tests under Synchrotron radiation: Original testing methods will be developed, in close collaboration with SOLEIL beamlines, INRAE and FEMTO-ST: 1) Multi-photon microscopy in environmental conditions or under mechanical loading to describe changes in structural cellulose (e.g. reorganization) in fibres and yarns using DISCO beamline. 2) Environmental tomography with the support of ANATOMIX beamline to describe local ultrastructural changes, especially in zones such as kink-bands, under mechanical or thermal stimulus, and 3) XRD to monitor changes in the crystallinity and orientation of cellulose during tensile or bending loading.
Manufacture and testing of composite materials: A range of mechanical tests will be designed and conducted on multi-layer, thermal compression moulded composites fabricated at the lab-scale. Focus will be on impact and damping properties, but also on microstructural analysis using lab equipment and nano tomography at ANATOMIX beamline, according to the investigated scale. Appropriate loading modes will be implemented on the Soleil Bulky machine, in respect with the using phase of the products; bending or compression tests will be preferred.

- Université de Bretagne SudThe objective of the Horizon Europe project UPWEARS is to design sustainable têxtile products made of flax, cork, hemp as well as by-products of the paper industry, with a focus on resource-efficient manufacturing processes and incorporating measures to reduce its carbon footprint throughout its lifecycle. This will contribute to the European têxtile industry’s digital and green transition, as well as to EU competitiveness in high-added value têxtiles (Market size in EU: 1.7 million people, €166 billion turnover, > €50 billion in export). UPWEARS brings together 15 European academic (11) and industrial (4) partners, including Universities of South Brittany and Cambridge. The project will begin in September 2024 and continue for 4 years.
