PhD Position in Energy-Efficient Beyond 5G Networks

Context and Objectives
Within the framework of a partnership between Inria teams COATI and DIANA, and the French National Research Agency (ANR), PEPR 5G, we are seeking a PhD candidate to contribute to the development of energy-efficient beyond 5G networks.
Research Focus
The recruited person will work on modelling the computing and network requirements of new applications in the context of B5G networks, establishing the link between their requirements and needs, and the perceived Quality of Experience by end users. This will involve experimenting with an application in various network setups and loads, building models relating resource utilisation to network traffic using a machine learning and data-driven approach.
Methodology
The PhD candidate will explore this topic by focusing on popular services such as gaming, virtual reality, web browsing, and video streaming. They will browse the literature for relevant work on modelling their quality of service and quality of experience, and design an experimental framework to run the services in a controlled environment where they can measure and analyse the consumed energy and the quality of experience at the application and user level.
Expected Outcomes
The aim is to understand the balance between energy consumption and Quality of Experience, and find optimal configurations of both network and services that lead to the best possible gain: minimising energy consumption without considerably losing in terms of end user quality of experience. The results of this study will be used for an optimal placement of network functions and appropriate adaptation of their traffic that allow to reach the optimal balance alongside the two studied dimensions.
Collaboration and Experimentation
The PhD candidate will be in connection with Chadi Barakat, Frédéric Giroire, Joanna Moulierac, and Thierry Turletti. Experimentation will be carried out on local platforms R2Lab and SophiaNode, and the upcoming Slices European platform.
Requirements and Benefits
The recruited person will have a strong background in networking skills, programming, and experimentation. They will also have a good command of English. The benefits of this position include subsidised meals, partial reimbursement of public transport costs, leave, possibility of teleworking, and flexible organisation of working hours.
Duration and Location
The PhD position is for 36 months, located in Sophia Antipolis, France. The gross salary per month is 2100€ brut per month (year 1 & 2) and 2190€ brut per month (year 3).
