The position

The Aga Khan Academy Dhaka is the fourth in the network of the Aga Khan Academies established by His Highness the Aga Khan.

The Academy features state-of-the-art facilities, a multicultural student body and an experienced team of educators and staff. We provide students with education of the highest standard in order to prepare them for lives characterised by leadership and service.

Admission to the Academy is competitive and based on student merit.

Role
The Counsellor is responsible to provide counselling opportunities to students, staff and families as required across both the Senior School. To take a lead role to ensure that the pastoral care systems meet the needs of the school community. To work collaboratively with all staff in their guidance and teaching roles to create conditions in which students can meet their potential. To network within and outside the school to ensure that individuals are assisted to find appropriate information and help for themselves. To help to establish a safe and inclusive climate in the school, free of intolerance, harassment and bullying. To act as an agent for positive change within the school community.

Main responsibilities: Provide Counselling to students by meeting them when appropriate. Facilitate group counselling sessions (e.g. grief, abuse survivors, anger management, smoking cessation, etc.). Keeping appropriate records of counselling work, ensuring they are kept securely and confidentially. Provide a monthly report, including a statistical analysis of guidance counsellor activities, to the Principals and Head of Academy. When appropriate, act as student advocate, e.g. at Discipline Committee meetings, Family Group Conferences. Be available to assist the Principals and Head with the appointment of Guidance Network Staff Engage in ongoing professional development, including attending relevant training workshops and conferences. Be involved in liaising with the community. Liaise with outside agencies (e.g. police).

SPECIFICATIONS (Candidate profile):
Required Attributes:

Teacher certification. Bachelors’ degree in a related area of study. Commitment to the vision of the Academy in a demonstrable and proactive manner. Commitment to the co-curricular life of the school. Flexibility about working the hours needed to fulfil requirements. Strong interpersonal skills, tact, patience and ability to work successfully in a multi-cultural environment. Education: Master’s degree in psychology or education related field. Professional Teaching Qualification. Note: This job description gives a broad outline of the scope of this position but is not intended to limit the Counsellor to more extensive involvement in the life of the school and support of students.

Skills:
Experience and Technical Skills Previous IB teaching. Trained as an IBE. Comfortable and adept with information technology. Other Skills and personal traits Excellent command of English and preferably Bangla – both written and oral. Knowledge and understanding of Bangladesh cultures
