  • The understanding and the control of plasmawall interaction and divertor regimes is crucial for the success of ITER and next step fusion devices. Recently many experimental studies have been performed to investigate the so called Xpoint Radiator regime consisting in a detached plasma with the majority of the power radiation localized around the Xpoint, thus decreasing the heat load on the divertor plates.
Recently, in WEST such plasma scenario has been developed with noteworthy results:

while detached divertor regime with clearly the majority of the radiation concentrated around the X-point is measured at the periphery of the plasma, similarly to the results in other tokamaks, an improved thermal confinement in the plasma core, for both electrons and ions, is observed.


  • In this internship, we propose to investigate this issue analyzing experimental data with the help of numerical modelling, in particular using the code SOLEDGE3X-EIRENE in transport mode. The impact of drift velocities on the distribution of heat and particle fluxes on the divertor plates will be evaluated, as will that of ballooned radial transport as measured in experiments. Pure deuterium plasma simulations and simulations with nitrogen injection will be carried out. Comparison with Langmuir probe data and visible spectroscopy will be important to assess the relevance of these simulations. The simulations will enable us to study the transition between the attached plasma and the ""Xpoint radiator"" regime, its stability and robustness, also from a numerical point of view. Finally, the evolution of W sources during this transition will be studied in experimental and simulation data. An extrapolation of these results to future tokamaks such as DTT will be discussed at the end of the internship.

- "L'Institut de Recherche sur la Fusion par Confinement Magnétique est l'un des départements de la Direction de la Recherche Fondamentale du CEA.

Depuis plus de 50 ans, son rôle est de mener des recherches sur une nouvelle source d'énergie :
la fusion par confinement magnétique, en s'associant avec le programme Fusion européen. L'IRFM est installé sur le Centre CEA de Cadarache.

Les activités de L'IRFM sont structurées autour de trois axes de recherches de développement:

  • contribuer à la réalisation du projet ITER et ceux de l'Approche Elargie (tokamak JT-60SA principalement),
- préparer l'opération scientifique d'ITER, à travers des activités d'expérimentation et de contrôle, ainsi que de théorie et de modélisation,
- établir les bases du futur réacteur de fusion.


Ces activités sont intimement connectées à un effort tout particulier de formation des générations futures de physiciens et de technologues de la fusion.
