FIDH, the International Federation for Human Rights, is an international human rights organization, bringing together 188 member organizations from 117 countries and territories.

FIDH's mandate is to contribute to the respect of all the rights defined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

FIDH aims at obtaining effective improvements in the protection of victims, the prevention of human rights violations and the accountability of their perpetrators.


FIDH has several priority areas :

Supporting Human Rights Defenders ; Fostering an environment conducive to democracy and freedoms ; Promoting women's rights ; Combating impunity and protecting populations from the most serious crimes ; and Promoting respect for human rights by economic players.


General objective of the position
Under the supervision of the Director of the Europe Program, the Program Officer helps

to consolidate links with internal and external actors and to implement the organizations' activities in Europe, with a focus on a new project focusing on rule of law and corruption in the EU.


Main tasks

  • Conduct desk and field research and draft reports, briefing notes, policy papers, advocacy papers and other written materials, in cooperation with other FIDH departments, FIDH board members and local partners ;
  • Keep abreast of relevant political, legal and institutional developments and advice the Program's director, other staff and local partners as appropriate ;
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of advocacy strategies targeting the EU and member states, as well as the Council of Europe, the OSCE and the UN ;
  • Establish and maintain relationships with EU, other international organizations and member states representatives, as well as with other civil society actors (NGO) and partners at the national and international level ; Liaise and coordinate with other FIDH departments, including other geographic and thematic desks, communications, finances and delegations to international organizations ;
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of communication activities, including drafting press release, articles and opeds, contributing to communication and social media actions and media work, in consultation with FIDH's communications department ;
  • Represent FIDH at public conferences, meetings and events, as well as with funders and the media ;
  • Contribute to monitoring progress and evaluating the impact of activities, and support in complying with funding obligations, including reporting and evaluation in relation to specific projects ;
  • Deliver timely and consistently with strategies and priorities and contribute to internal discussions on the elaboration of FIDH's future global strategy and a Europe regional strategy.

Experience

Essential:

  • Minimum of 3 years of work experience in the field of human rights, with an NGO, an international organization, a governmental institution, an academic institution or research centre
  • Indepth understanding of human rights issues and the political and socio
- economic context in Europe

  • Substantial knowledge of European, particularly EU law, institutions and policies and of regional human rights protection mechanisms

Desirable:

  • Experience in conducting research and documentation (including field investigations) on human rights issues
  • Advocacy experience with the EU and member states
  • Previous NGO experience

Competences and skills

Essential:

  • Excellent written and spoken English
  • Ability to think strategically and implement successful advocacy for policy change
  • Excellent writing skills and attention to details
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, manage competing demands, prioritize and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work collaboratively and inclusively in a multicultural team, showing tact and cultural sensitivity
  • A demonstrated commitment to human rights and social justice.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of other European languages and at least basic knowledge of French (knowledge of Polish and other Central European languages would be an asset)
  • Previous experience working on corruption issues and/or knowledge of international and European anticorruption standards and mechanisms.

Terms and conditions of employment

  • 12 months fulltime fixedterm contract (extendable depending on availability of additional funding)
  • Position based in Brussels (strongly preferred) however other locations may be considered
  • Salary from 2 800 € gross per year over 13 months.
  • Flexible working arrangements, including possibility of working remotely

  • 50% of the cost of public transport passes paid by the employer.
