OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST

In accordance with the UNESCO Programme and Budget /C5), Major Programme II: Natural Sciences, C/5 Output 4.SC4 - Member States capacities strengthened to improve STI policies, access to scientific and technological advancements and enhance knowledge sharing, including through Open Science, and within the framework of the L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science (FWIS) Programme, under the overall supervision and guidance of the Chief of Section for Science Technology Innovation Policy (SC/PBS/STIP), the Consultant shall undertake the following activities:

Within the framework of the L'Oréal-UNESCO FWIS Young Talents Programmes:

1. Ensure the timely implementation of the work related to the FWIS Young Talents regional Programmes and related endowments managed by UNESCO (Sub-Saharan Africa, Levant, Maghreb, and Middle East), according to the specific timeline for each Programme, including:

  • Provide a summary about the 2024 call for applications (annual timeline, eligible applications, selection procedures, final selection);
  • Set up and coordinate the logistics and communications related to the four regional ceremonies, to be held between October and December 2024;
  • Contribute to the effective and timely establishment and follow-up of the non-standard contracts related to the 2024 endowments.

2. Ensure the monitoring of the 53 regional and national FWIS Young Talents Programmes worldwide, promptly provide information and short briefings about these Programmes when requested by UNESCO CAB, PAX, and SC Sectors, and liaise with the Fondation L'Oréal and UNESCO Field Offices for communication and advocacy activities


Within the framework of the 2025 edition of the L'Oréal-UNESCO FWIS International Awards:

3. Prepare, facilitate and participate in-person in the preparatory meetings organized at UNESCO and the Fondation L'Oréal Headquarters in Paris and the deliberation meeting of the International Jury to be held in November 2024 (dates tbc).

4. Set up and coordinate the logistics and communications related to the organization of the 2025 FWIS International Awards Ceremony, and the FWIS week of events, to be held in June 2025 in Paris (dates tbc), in close cooperation with the Fondation L'Oréal, its sub-contractors, and UNESCO concerned Sections and Units, notably:

i. Ensure the overall coordination for the planning, implementation, and follow-up of the different meetings organized in the framework of the 2025 FWIS week;

ii. provide inputs to the list of speakers, scientific partners and networks to be invited.

iii. draft the working documents (briefings, presentations, press releases, speeches) required for and during the FWIS week 2025.

5. Facilitate the coordination of the communication campaign between the Fondation L'Oréal, UNESCO CPE and UNESCO Field Offices, and prepare, in close cooperation with the Science Sector communication team and CPE, communication materials (texts, visuals, social media messages, videos) about the research projects of the five 2025 Laureates.


Within the framework of the L'Oréal-UNESCO FWIS partnership more broadly:

6. Coordinate the participation of FWIS Laureates, International Rising Talents and Young Talents in activities and high-level scientific events organized by or with UNESCO, as foreseen in the Partnership Agreement with the Fondation L'Oréal, including the 2025 International Day of Women and Girls in Science (11 February)

7. Work in close cooperation with the team at Fondation L'Oréal to ensure the smooth running of the L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Community Platform ), notably by:

a. Contributing to the organization of online workshops and meetings focusing on scientific exchanges among the FWIS Alumnae.

b. Providing inputs to the newsletters and communication materials to share with the FWIS community through the Platform

c. Tracking and monitoring of the FWIS Alumnae's use of the Platform.

8. Provide relevant information and inputs about the FWIS partnership to briefings and working documents related to gender equality and science.

9. Update the UNESCO webpage dedicated to the FWIS Programme in English and French, in close cooperation with the SC web editor;

10. Assist in the overall coordination and daily activities of the FWIS Programme, including planning, monitoring and reporting of activities.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

  • University degree in fields related to international relations, international organizations, communication, sciences, etc; or other related discipline.

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • At least five years of relevant professional experience in project management, programme coordination, communication, event organization in an international environment.
  • Experience on the issues pertaining to gender and science.
  • Computer literacy and very good knowledge of videoconferencing facilities (i.e. Zoom, Microsoft Teams, etc.).

LANGUAGES

  • Excellent knowledge of English and French (written and spoken).

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

  • Good interpersonal skills, tact and diplomacy with ability to build and maintain effective partnerships at all levels.
  • Excellent coordination and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated capacity to work under tight deadlines.

  • Knowledge of other UNESCO official language/s: Arabic, Chinese, Russian, Spanish.
