Postdoctoral Position at Vision Institute (Paris, France) in Retinal Pathology and Development of Next-Generation TreatmentsA two-year (one-year renewable) postdoc position funded by INSERM is available at the Institut de la Vision (IDV) for a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to understand the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying VEGF resistance in several eye diseases and evaluate next generation treatments. Most retinopathies, including diabetic retinopathies, involve extensive vascular remodeling marked by vascular leakage, edema, and pathological neovascularization that can rapidly impair vision if left untreated. Current therapy relies mainly on intravitreal anti-VEGF injections, which help many patients but show major limitations in the diabetic retinopathy patient population, where resistance can reach about 30%, leaving many without effective options. The mechanisms behind anti-VEGF resistance in these patients remain poorly understood, and a deeper understanding is essential for developing future treatments. Elevated inflammatory cytokines and integrins have been reported in multiple cancer and retinopathy studies, suggesting a role in resistance. This project will combine state-of-the-art quantification of adhesion molecules and inflammatory cytokines in ocular fluids from patients with in vitro and in vivo studies to identify molecules associated with VEGF resistance in diabetic retinopathy and to develop new models of VEGF-resistant retinopathies. Finally, the project will evaluate the therapeutic potential of a specific integrin inhibitor for treating VEGF-resistant retinopathies. The project will be conducted within the framework of an international collaboration between INSERM (IDV, Paris, France) and ICMR (Narayana Netralaya Foundation, Bengaluru, India). The position involves analyzing multi-omics data from existing human patient cohorts and developing models of VEGF resistant proliferative retinal diseases. Investigations of vascular remodeling will employ a broad range of in vitro and in vivo methodologies, including immunochemistry on retinal flatmounts, live imaging, bulk and single-cell RNA sequencing. The successful candidate will join the “Inflammation and Immunology in Retinal Diseases” team at IDV under the supervision of Dr. Guillonneau, a dynamic and multidisciplinary team with expertise spanning molecular to cellular mechanisms, and will also collaborate closely with the GROW research lab, led by Dr. Arkasubhra Ghosh.Candidates with a recent PhD in Neuroscience and experience with relevant experimental techniques (bioinformatics, RNAseq, multiplex ELISA, immunohistochemistry and animals models) are encouraged to apply. Candidates whose profiles partly overlaps the requirements but who have a strong interest in acquiring the other expertise are also encouraged to apply. The IDV is one of the leading European research centers focused on ocular diseases. It unites researchers, clinicians, and industry partners under one roof to advance the discovery, testing, and development of treatments and technological innovations that benefit visually impaired patients. Postdocs also benefit from professional development opportunities at both the IDV and Sorbonne University. To apply for the position, please send a motivation letter with a statement of research interest and a summary of previous research activity, a detailed curriculum vitae, and two reference letters to Xavier Guillonneau (xavier.guillonneau@inserm.fr).
