Internship Environment

The trainee will be part of the LEM Innovation team and will work on a high density and flexible current sensor family dedicated to motor applications and drive trains with currents up to 2000A and bandwidth up to 1MHz. The sensor portfolio targets an integration very close to a power module and will be used by end customer to measure phase current of a motor and protect the power module against abnormal conditions (short circuit, over-load…). Preliminary designs and simulation have been performed on the sensor concept. The intern will be responsible to evaluate and optimize by simulation several variants of the concept. Finally, he will build and characterize experimentally performances of the prototyped sensors.


Intership Planning Description

During a first phase, the trainee will have to catch up knowledge and skills on operating principle of open loop hall effect current sensors and especially coreless sensors. He will be aware and trained on the operating principle of the various elements integrated within the sensor (magnetic, electronic and customer application) and will quickly become autonomous on the subject.


The 2nd phase of the internship will be dedicated to adapt and design Finite Element Analysis model of the electromagnetic architecture of the sensor and its possible variants. Physical environment such mechanical dimensions and materials will be implemented to deliver a model as close as possible to a digital twin of the sensor. Sensor shape will be optimized by simulation to reach highest achievable current density and accuracy. Continuous as well as frequency analysis will be performed to identify limitations of each proposed concepts with regards to application requirements.


The third and final phase will be dedicated to build and characterize one or several prototypes under high current and full temperature range. Intern Profile

For this internship or end-of-study project, the student will have to be comfortable with Finite Element tools used for Magneto-static and frequency analysis such FEMM, COMSOL, ANSYS, FLUX3D…


MATLAB or SCILAB environment will be used to run parametric analysis, optimization, and post processing.


During characterization of the prototypes, the intern will evolve in a laboratory environment to set up test protocols and equipment for characterizing the sensor (multimeter, oscilloscope, climatic chamber, etc.).
