The Inria centre at Université Côte d'Azur includes 37 research teams and 8 support services. The centre's staff (about 500 people) is made up of scientists of different nationalities, engineers, technicians and administrative staff. The teams are mainly located on the university campuses of Sophia Antipolis and Nice as well as Montpellier, in close collaboration with research and higher education laboratories and establishments (Université Côte d'Azur, CNRS, INRAE, INSERM...), but also with the regiona economic players.
With a presence in the fields of computational neuroscience and biology, data science and modeling, software engineering and certification, as well as collaborative robotics, the Inria Centre at Université Côte d'Azur is a major player in terms of scientific excellence through its results and collaborations at both European and international levels.

**Mission confiée**:
Histopathological imaging is of paramount importance for a correct recognition of several neoplastic lesions.
Nonetheless, the histological examination, visually performed by pathologists, is typically time-consuming and operator dependent.
Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based technologies seem to be a promising tool, able to face the above-mentioned challenges.
Unfortunately, most of the highest accurate AI solutions leverage tons of annotated samples (i.e., images and corresponding labels) to be proficiently trained. This is a strong limitation in the histopathological domain, being the labelling of the images not only time-consuming, but also extremely tedious for a pathologist. Besides, histological images exhibit a huge variability due the different organs and pathologies but also because of the different employed staining. Besides, even for given pathology and staining, some variability can be observed inter and intra hospitals. A multi-centric tool is therefore currently still a challenge.
The ambition is to embed multi-centric data with different pathologies and staining.
The approach will be exemplified on two different classical problems which are classification and image segmentation. The first task is to classify and grade histological images of cancer. In case of segmentation, we will delineate, possibly before classification, the different structures within a tissue. We will consider several datasets within a collaboration with Nice Hospital that include samples of kidney and prostate cancer, kidney graft, kidney biopsies from diabetic patient. Some examples of produces software include cancer subtype classification, multi-scale segmentation of kidney tissue (cell nuclei, glomeruli, tubules, vessels).
