This project aims to implement bio-based carbon materials and biodegradable binders to design recyclable and efficient electrodes for Na-ion batteries. At first, hard carbon materials will be synthesized from bio-sourced precursors and their characteristics (structure, chemistry, porosity etc.) determined. Electrodes will be prepared using the as-prepared hard carbons and various biosourced binders to promote their recycling after use in a Na-ion battery. The optimization of the electrode formulation will be performed and the impact on the performance evaluated. The electrode/electrolyte interface will be studied to understand its structure to ensure high efficiency and a long electrode life cycle. Recycling methods for spent electrodes will be investigated.
The Ph.D. will perform the synthesis of carbon materials, their characterization by several techniques (TGA, gas adsorption, XRD, SEM/TEM, XPS, etc) and the determination of performance (CV, EIS, GCD, etc.). He/she will analyze the used electrodes and implement protocols for their recycling.
