during the following cycles. In order to predict the behaviour of the materials among the storage cycles, it is crucial to determine reliable kinetic models of both reactions and to quantify the modelling uncertainties.
The goals of this PhD thesis will be 1) to study the gas-solid reaction
experimentally, 2) to model it and then 3) to quantify the uncertainties of the modelling. The first phase will involve experiments carried out in a thermobalance and different other experimental techniques used to characterise the powder before, during and after an experiment.
The second phase will consist in the comparison of two approaches: physical-geometrical modelling and machine learning methods such as neural networks given that physical-chemical modelling can sometimes fail to deliver a coherent model with highly accurate predictions. The
third phase will involve the use of suitable statistical and data-science methods. The methodology will be applied to both the charge reaction (e.g. a reduction, decarbonatation or dehydration step) and the discharge reaction (e.g. an oxidation, carbonatation or hydration step).
Moreover, the evolution of the chemical kinetics after several charge-discharge cycles shall also be investigated.
