Phdsimulating Sustainability Scenarios in Telecoms

Your role is to conduct doctoral research **to simulate scenarios for sustainability in the telecommunications sector **using artificial intelligence and a digital twin.

The telecommunications sector has a significant impact on planetary boundaries, both in terms of energy and the environment. The current state of the art [ADEME-ARCEP][ CITIZING-HCC][ SHIFT]proposes scenarios for sustainable telecommunications networks with adjusted deployment objectives and service levels. However, these evaluations are based on simplified representations of deployments and usage, which can introduce estimation errors and hinder the evaluation of certain sustainability levers. Additionally, the consequences of telecommunications evolution scenarios on some planetary boundaries remain to be assessed. Finally, the economic challenges of sustainable scenarios are unexplored.

The objective of this thesis is to propose a methodology for planning future telecommunications networks while considering energy and environmental constraints. The sub-objectives of the thesis include:

- Completing the state of the art on sustainability levers and scenarios for telecommunications networks.
- Conducting macroscopic evaluations of sustainability levers and scenarios to select those to be considered.
- Identifying the data necessary for quantifying the energy and environmental impacts of telecommunications networks.
- Utilizing this data with artificial intelligence tools and the concept of a digital twin.
- Designing, developing, and evaluating models and methodologies for quantifying future environmental impacts of telecommunications networks.
- Analyzing the interactions between different factors and their energy and environmental impacts to determine reduction strategies.
- Proposing a reverse methodology for designing telecommunications networks under energy and environmental constraints.
- Analyzing the economic challenges induced by the considered scenarios.

**Required scientific and technical skills and personal qualities for the position**:

- Specialization in the field of statistics, machine learning or artificial intelligence
- Knowledge of telecommunications networks or energy and environmental issues
- Programming skills
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in French and English
- Ability to work autonomously and in a team

**Required education**: Master's degree level (university degree or engineering school)

**Preferred experience**: Internship experience in numerical modeling and simulation or environmental impact assessment.
