**Mission**:
For years, Ariane Group has manufactured thermal protections for space launchers made out of carbon fibre reinforced thermoset resin composites. These protections meet the industrial specifications in terms of thermal performances (thermal isolation and resistance to ablation). The thermal and thermo-mechanical behaviour of the cured material is known, together with the thermal behaviour during cure.
Earlier works have focused on the identification of the evolution of the cure kinetics and thermal properties during cure together with the evolution of the mechanical properties of the material. The goal was to identify the causes of the development of residual stresses within the manufactured parts and to predict the evolution of their distribution and amplitude during cure. The proposed study aims at improving this description, leading to a more accurate knowledge of the material-process link.
Goals: The proposed study aims at developing a methodology that permits to simulate the different mechanisms occurring during the cure of the carbon fibre reinforced phenolic resin composite material. This latter takes place in a closed mould submitted to an autoclave environment. This would allow to better understand the development of cure induced residual stresses within the material, and its impact on the manufactured part performances. This work will also permit to predict the pressure increase inside the mould during curing. This will highly help the design of the mould and of the manufacturing process, with the aim of improving its reliability and reproducibility.
The proposed work includes the analysis and quantification of the variations of mechanical properties of the involved material as a function of the degree of cure and temperature, the analysis of the curing products (constitution, phase diagram ) and the in-situ analysis of the mechanical behaviour of the material thanks to dilatometric measurements during cure
