Clear-sky observations from the hyperspectral Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI), on board Metop-A/B/C, are the most assimilated observations in Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models providing substantial vertical sensitivities to temperature and water vapor in the atmosphere as well as other chemical species. IASI is a major instrument due to its spectral resolution and radiometric accuracy in the infrared spectrum. In addition, its operational success has been ensured by the accurate simulation of radiances using fast RTM. With the new IASI-NG (Next Generation), the observed atmospheric spectrum will be characterized by an improved spectral resolution and radiometric accuracy. In order to benefit from IASI-NG improved capabilities, a continuous effort in the assessment of the infrared spectroscopy and the validation of RTM has to be made by the research and operational weather community.

The physical process governing the radiative transfer in clear-sky situation is the molecular absorption of the radiation. This molecular absorption is quantified through the atmospheric transmittance. In fast RTM, the transmittance is parameterized from line-by-line (LBL) models that simulate the fine spectral structure of molecular absorption using spectroscopic databases. These fast RTMs, together with their jacobians, can then be used in data assimilation or inversion algorithms in order to retrieve the atmospheric state associated with observed radiances. It has been recognized that radiative transfer codes can benefit from inter-comparison in order to identify weaknesses and strengths in the spectroscopic databases (Trattoria 2020 workshop).

Objectives of the thesis:
At Météo-France, and in the majority of National Weather Services (NWS), the fast RTM in use is RTTOV (Saunders et al., 2018). In this thesis, we propose to study the impact of the infrared spectroscopy in RTTOV clear-sky simulations for IASI and the future IASI-NG. In this regard, we plan to compare the current LBL model used by RTTOV (LBLRTM) to other models such as 4A/OP and ARAHMIS from the French community. LBLRTM is based on the HITRAN spectroscopic database whereas 4A/OP and ARAHMIS can use the GEISA spectroscopic database and/or HITRAN.

Comparisons of RTTOV against LBL models have already been conducted (Saunders et al., 2007; Matricardi, 2009). Here, we propose a new approach consisting in using transmittances from others LBL models directly in RTTOV. Then, it is planned to use a database of IASI observations colocated with atmospheric profiles from radiosondes (ARSA), ERA-5 atmospheric reanalysis (for temperature and specific humidity) and CAMS profiles (for CO2 and CH4) to conduct a statistical analysis of the differences between simulated and the observed radiance spectra.

The expected benefits of this thesis are a better understanding of the spectroscopy in the IR domain, an improved RTTOV model thanks to the work of the French LBL community, as well as a quantification of the spectroscopic parameters effect on the variational assimilation and a better usage of the hyperspectral IR observations in NWP models. At the spectroscopic level, we expect an improvement in the wator vapour absorption bands. This thesis will also benefit to the Forum mission (far-infrared spectrum measurements). The selected student will have interaction with the scientific community involved in the preliminary studies dedicated to the preparation of this mission.

Year 1:

- Bibliography: radiative transfer, spectroscopic databases, and 1D-var retrieval.
- Adaptation of RTTOV with atmospheric transmittances from different LBL models.
- Development of the database of colocated atmospheric profiles (radiosonde, reanalysis, CAMS) and observations.
- Comparisons of simulated and observed radiance spectra. Statistical analysis of differences.

Year 2:

- Jacobian computation/comparison between LBL models. Publication of the results.
- Extension of the analysis to IASI-NG.

Year 3:

- Handling of the 1D-var software and assessment of the impact of different spectroscopic databases on the retrieval of temperature, water vapour and surface. Publication of the results.
- Redaction of the PhD manuscript
