**Mission**:
For the development of future telescopes as well as for all heterodyne instruments, high-resolution spectroscopic imaging in the THz domain is an important issue that gathers increasing interest in many scientific fields. This can be achieved only through the development of a mixer technology in multi-pixel configuration.
Our laboratory has a very good experience of HEB mixers operating in the THz range. State of the art sensitivities were obtained at 1.3 and 2.5 THz on single-pixel mixers developed during the CNES R&T actions. With a view to making multi-pixel mixers from the HEB made in the laboratory, we plan to investigate a new concept of the mixer in order to allow its integration into a compact and efficient multi-pixel structure.
This study builds on our current development of compact and ultra-sensitive THz detection systems and will help us better meet the needs of future space observation missions.
**Work description**:
The realization of a heterodyne camera is more complex than a camera based on direct detection. A heterodyne receiver requires not only a good reception of the RF signal to be detected, but also of that from the local oscillator. An efficient extraction of the intermediate frequency signal is also crucial. The HEB mixer is sensitive to the fluctuations of the bias circuit, the LO signal and the bath temperature, so special attention must be paid to ensure good stability of the whole detection system. The operating temperature of a superconducting HEB is some degree kelvin, which adds additional complexities for the realization of the camera.
In this thesis project, all these elements mentioned above will be reviewed. Theoretical and experimental studies will be carried out in order to design and realize a highly compact and built-in mixer module to allow the 2D integration with the aim of building a sensitive THz camera without restrictions on the number or arrangement of pixels.
Starting from the mixer block already developed in the laboratory using the integrated antenna / lens configuration, the work consists first of the study of HEB's intermediate frequency (IF) characteristics in order to find solutions to optimize the extraction of the mixer's IF signal.
Works on the miniaturization and integration of the existing mixer’s bias and filtering circuits will be undertaken simultaneously with the aim of design and realization of a single-pixel module including the RF circuit, the DC bias circuit and the IF interface circuit.
The second part of the thesis will be devoted to the integration of the single-pixel modules to form a compact mixer array. The study on the structure distributing the LO signal to the pixels of the camera will also be carried out. A modification/adaptation of the mixer's RF circuit could be performed to optimize RF/LO reception. The realization of a prototype of the detection chain is expected.
