The Inria centre at Université Côte d'Azur includes 37 research teams and 8 support services. The centre's staff (about 500 people) is made up of scientists of different nationalities, engineers, technicians and administrative staff. The teams are mainly located on the university campuses of Sophia Antipolis and Nice as well as Montpellier, in close collaboration with research and higher education laboratories and establishments (Université Côte d'Azur, CNRS, INRAE, INSERM...), but also with the regiona economic players.
With a presence in the fields of computational neuroscience and biology, data science and modeling, software engineering and certification, as well as collaborative robotics, the Inria Centre at Université Côte d'Azur is a major player in terms of scientific excellence through its results and collaborations at both European and international levels.

**Mission confiée**:
The goal of this thesis will be the development of versatile renderers that can be used at the crossroads of physically-based rendering and novel-view synthesis. The key element of this project will be the development of solutions that allow progressive accuracy control in various forms. Building on the success of 3D Gaussian Splatting 3DGS [Kerbl et al. 2023] developed in our group, and that of the more traditional physically-based differentiable rendering solutions [Vicini et al, Zeltner et al. 2021], we will propose versatile renderers that will provide a novel bridge between these different methodologies. We will build on recent work in the group that allows hierarchical constructions for 3DGS to exploit the speed and efficiency of hierarchical volumetric visibility solutions [Sillion & Drettakis 1995] and fast but approximate point-based global illumination methods [Wang et al. 2015]. We will start with solution that can handle a small number of indirect bounces, moving on to more complex solutions with difficult light transport. For the latter, we will build on neural rendering solutions developed recently in the group [Diolatzis et al. 2022]. A critical aspect will be the development of error bounds for such approximate and machine-learning driven solutions that has proved elusive in the past.
