**Mission**:
The granulometric characteristics and dispersal patterns of pyroclastic deposits formed during magmatic eruptions are known to be controlled mainly by the height of the eruptive column and by wind strength and direction.
The recovery of the height and velocity of an ash plume is an important issue in volcanology. For example, it is known that large volcanic eruptions can temporarily alter the climate, causing global cooling and modifying precipitation patterns (e.g. Robock, 2000); the dispersion of ash/gas in the atmosphere, its impact and its lifetime around the globe depend strongly on the altitude of injection. Plume height information is essential for ash dispersion modelling and air traffic safety. In addition, plume height during explosive volcanism is one of the main parameters for estimating mass eruption rates (e.g. Mastin et al., 2009).
Plume altitude is also important for determining SO2 concentration from specialized space spectrometers (e.g. Corradini et al., 2010; Carboni et al., 2012). Furthermore, the distribution of ash deposits on the ground is highly dependent on the altitude of the ash cloud, which has an impact on risk assessment and crisis management. Furthermore, a spatially detailed measurement of plume height could serve as an index for gas emission rate estimation and ash plume volume research, both of which have an impact on climate research, air quality assessment for aviation and finally for the understanding of the volcanic system itself, as ash/gas emission rates are related to the pressurization state of the magma chamber (e.g. Urai, 2004; Hreinsdottir et al., 2014).
The main idea is that the physical distance between the panchromatic sensor (PAN) and the multi-spectral sensors (MS), both on Landsat-type satellites, produces a baseline and temporal offset between PAN and MS image acquisitions during a single satellite pass. This information can be used to extract a spatially detailed map of VCTH from virtually any multi-spectral push broom system. However, the time lag produces ambiguity in the PEM extraction, as volcanic clouds have moved between the two image acquisitions.
In this context, the synchronous stereoscopy capability of the CO3D (Constellation Optique en 3D) mission is a game-changer.
