**Mission**:
Contribution of stratospheric balloon measurements to the detection of infrasound from explosive sources, and to the modeling of mesoscale atmospheric dynamics and its impact on infrasound propagation

In the frame of the Stratéole-2 project (ST2), superpressure balloon (SPB) flights were conducted to study the dynamics and chemistry of the tropical upper troposphere-lower stratosphere (UTLS) region. The tropical UTLS supports a wealth of atmospheric wave motions, from large-scale equatorial waves to mesoscale gravity waves (1-1000 km). Drifting with the wind, SPBs provide a complete description of atmospheric inertia-gravity waves (e.g. Corcos et al, 2021) and constitute an invaluable dataset for model evaluation (e.g. Podglajen et al., 2020).

In 2021, for the first time, the ST2 balloon payload also included pressure sensors sampling at 1 Hz, in the infrasound frequency range. While limited balloon-borne infrasound measurements had been performed in the past (e.g., Bowman and Krishnamoorthy, 2021), ST2 provided the first stratospheric balloon record of a major geophysical event, the violent eruption of the Hunga-Tonga (HT) undersea volcano on January 15, 2022. Compared to ground stations, balloon sensors demonstrated superior detection capabilities, benefiting both from being located in an upper stratospheric acoustic waveguide, and from reduced exposure to acoustic noise generated by ground turbulence (Podglajen, et al., 2022). So far, analyses have been restricted to the January 15 case, which was exceptional in terms of energy release and altitude of the plume.

The goals of the present thesis project are to (1) assess the ability of high-resolution balloon infrasound measurements to detect and characterize infrasound from explosive sources of various magnitudes, and to (2) evaluate the representation of mesoscale atmospheric dynamics in high-resolution models, as well as its impact on infrasound propagation and detection.

On the first aspect, we intend to precisely document the advantages of upper-air infrasound measurements and their complementarity with ground-based observations to characterize explosive sources of infrasound. Less intense events than the January 15 HT blast were recorded by ST2 balloons at a range of distances from the source, in particular during the 2021-2022 HT eruptive sequence. Detailed data analyses of the different events and infrasound propagation simulations will be used to assess the detection capabilities and information content of upper-air infrasound observations.

The second part of the project will focus on evaluating mesoscale atmospheric dynamics in a global storm-resolving model, and its impact on infrasound propagation and signal interpretation. It is well recognized that mesoscale dynamics has a large influence on the propagation of infrasound (e.g., Kulichkov et al., 2008). To date, this effect has mostly been taken into account stochastically. However, the development of high-resolution (km) global models in recent years is associated with the new ability to explicitly resolve mesoscale dynamics. Simulations will be run with the German weather service high-top (>100 km) UA-ICON (Upper atmosphere icosahedral non-hydrostatic model) model (Giorgetta et al., 2018), recently implemented at CEA. ST2 balloon-borne observations will be used to evaluate the representation of mesoscale atmospheric dynamics, following a methodology previously applied to reanalysis. This will enable us to quantify resolved and unresolved wave variability, to estimate the impact on infrasound propagation and the associated uncertainty.

The PhD project will be co-supervised by Alexis Le Pichon (CEA-DAM, PhD advisor) and Aurélien Podglajen (LMD, PhD co-advisor). The collaboration between the two host institutions is formalized in the frame of the Laboratoire de Recherche Commun (LRC) Yves Rocard.
