- Photosensors, photovoltaic devices, light to current transducers are based on light absorption and light conversion. These can be performed within the same materials on one hand (e.g. direct bandgap semiconductors, even 2D semiconductors), or by two coupled species on the other hand: one optimized for photon collection, and the other optimized for light conversion. The latter is typically implemented in natural photosynthesis for which complex pigment-based proteins play the role of light harvester and drive the energy towards the photosystem reaction centre for conversion into charges. Such mechanisms have been mimicked in bio-inspired devices such as dye-sensitized solar cells. We propose here to couple solid state nanodevices with bio-sourced natural systems from photosynthetic species.**The project aims at addressing novel heterodimensional materials for light transduction, which are hybrid materials assembled from 2D materials and carotenoid-based optically-active molecules from photosynthetic plant cells.**:

- 2D materials will be efficient for converting energy or retrieving the separated charges as these mono/few-atom thick layers are extremely sensitive to their electrostatic environment and prone to strongly couple to the carotenoids. - CNRS - Institut NéelNéel Institute is a large laboratory focused on Condensed Matter Physics, it hosts approximately 450 persons, including 125 scientists and 50 professors / associate professor, 130 engineers, technicians and administrative supports, 145 non-permanent.
The host group gathers condensed matter physicists exploring quantum states hosted by two-dimensional materials (graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides for instance). We focus on quantum states involving different kinds of excitations, electronic, phononic or magnonic, possibly related to strong interaction effects, and seek ways to tune these interactions. This is done via, e.g., electromagnetic fields, mechanical deformations, the proximity to magnetic or superconducting materials, or by controlling structural parameters such as the twist angle between two stacked 2D materials.

- The project is very interdiciplinary, at the interface between chemistry, biology and physics. He/She will work in collaboration with the different partners. In particular, H. Okuno will be strongly involved with the student in a challenging TEM observation of the molecule organization onto the 2D materials. He/She shall have a strong background in solid state physics and a taste for spectroscopy, electron transport and clean room fabrication.-
