Job Summary

Under minimum supervision, performs lead diagnosis and skilled/general mechanical work involving repair and maintenance of vehicles, light/heavy equipment, emergency vehicles, maintenance equipment, and other automotive/mechanical machinery. Participates in maintenance and repair quality control program. Provides technical training to other automotive technicians.

Essential Functions:

- Provides direction, training, guidance, and assistance to employees. Assists Lead Master Mechanic in supervising main shop operations/activities. Assists other technicians in diagnosing problems; supervises main shop operations and shop personnel in absence of supervisor. Receives various forms, reports, correspondence, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate. Participates in maintenance/repair quality control program. Provides technical oversight and evaluates the quality of repair work of other automotive technicians. Makes decisions on outsourcing work to outside vendors and shops and on parts and tools purchases. Examines vehicles/equipment to determine necessary repair or maintenance work. Creates and updates work orders; generates daily reports of status of work orders. Distributes work orders to other technicians. (30%)
- Assists in maintaining inventory of division equipment, parts, tires, tools, and supplies; charges out parts to work orders; assists in preparing specifications for new vehicles/equipment; picks up/delivers materials as needed. Transports, loads and unloads various equipment, parts, and materials used in projects. May transport fuel. Performs and evaluates independent skilled mechanical repair work on ambulances, vehicles, trucks, or other automotive/mechanical equipment. Diagnoses technical problems of vehicles and equipment, and transfers work order to other technicians for repair. Inspects, tests, and diagnoses problems involving various systems/components of vehicles or equipment. (30%)
- Performs and evaluates appropriate repair, removal, replacement, rebuilding, or maintenance work on vehicle/equipment systems and components. Assists in ensuring compliance with all applicable laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures; ensures adherence to established safety procedures; monitors work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations; reports accidents and incidents. Operates a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools associated with repairing, maintaining and testing vehicles and equipment. Performs general cleaning/maintenance tasks necessary to keep tools/equipment in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning vehicles and equipment, or cleaning shop/work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment. Performs and evaluates general welding and fabrication work. (30%)
- Performs and evaluates routine and preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment. Tests vehicles, machinery, equipment, and parts to ensure proper operations; conducts road tests of vehicles undergoing repair. (10%)

**Education**:

- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Emergency Vehicle Technician certification E0, E1, E2, E3, & E4 required.
- ASE Master Mechanic Certifications A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, A6, A7, & A8 required.

Work Experience:

- 4-6 years previous experience and/or training involving mechanics, automotive/mechanical maintenance, welding, and vehicle/equipment operation; plus 24 months of experience at the Emergency Vehicle Technician II level, or its equivalent required.

Licenses:

- DLR-Colorado Driver's License Class R - DMV - Department of Motor Vehicles required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

- Knowledge of gasoline and diesel combustion engines, parts, and systems, including their design, users, repair and maintenance.
- Knowledge of fuel systems, starting and charging, brakes, suspension, and drivetrains (including automatic transmissions, transfer cases, differentials).
- Knowledge of procedures for operating motor vehicles including cars and trucks.
- Knowledge of Ambulance systems, including oxygen delivery systems, suction, inverters, lighting, AC and DC electrical circuitry, seating, safety equipment, drivability, HVAC requirements, and stretcher systems.
- Knowledge of machines and tools, including their design, installation, uses, repair and maintenance.
