The PhD will be part of the Horizon Europe project AGRILOOP (Pushing the frontier of circular agriculture by converting residues into novel economic, social and environmental opportunities), coordinated by N. Gontard (INRAE), including 37 partners (half academic/industrial) from France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Denmark, Netherland, Germany, Hungary, Belgium, Switzerland, United-Kingdom and China. Driven by a « zero-waste » society requirement, AGRILOOP aims at eco-efficiently upgrading underexploited agricultural residues into a portfolio of high added-value bioproducts by developing safe-and-sustainable-by-design bioconversion processes integrated in a cascading biorefinery approach.

In this context, the joint research unit IATE (Montpellier, France) is engaged in the development of new materials based on PHAs (polyhydroxyalcanoates produced by bacterial fermentation) and cutin (plant biopolyester). The upgrading of agricultural residues into biomaterials necessarily involves taking into account their final technical performance, and how they contribute to reduce their environmental impacts while respecting the safety of the user or the consumer.

The PhD thesis will be involved in the development of a frugal design mindset to guide the elaboration of these new materials in response to end-users needs and specifications of the target markets (e.g. food and non-food packaging, agricultural films) and on the basis of health and environmental criteria. This will rely on an integrated approach: processing of materials, characterization of their functional properties (mechanical, barrier, thermal, optical, biodegradability), analysis of materials contamination by pesticides and microplastics. A benefit-risk analysis will be implemented based on an assessment of the environmental impacts (assessed by life cycle analysis) and the level of exposure to hazardous substances of consumers and users. The expected impact relies on developing a range of new safe and eco-efficient materials able to give value to unused agro-wastes, while substituting non renewable petro-chemical resources and contributing to solve non biodegradable plastics accumulation in our environment.

- Laboratoire de recherche UMR IATE, Université de Montpellier, Montpellier, FranceThe Agropolymer Engineering and Emerging Technologies Joint Research Unit (UMR IATE 1208) brings together staff from INRA, the University of Montpellier and Montpellier SupAgro. It is developing a multi-disciplinary scientific approach to the study, the transformation and the development of renewable resources from the agricultural, forestry and agri-food sectors. It is particularly interested in the structure and functionalities of biopolymers and biomolecules. Its expertise lies at the interface between biochemistry, physical chemistry, process engineering, biotechnology, chemistry, physics and numerical and computational modelling.

At UMR IATE, the PhD student will join the ePOP (eco-efficient Polymeric and Organic Packaging) team. The supervising team, and more broadly the ePOP team, will offer solid expertise in the fields of eco-design of materials processing, analysis and characterisation of plastic materials and particles, analytical chemistry and matter transfer. Supervision will be provided in a collegial manner by the management team, with key contacts for the aspects of implementation, material transfers, structural characterisation of polymers and modelling of structure/transfer relationships, both for the technical and practical aspects and for the scientific and strategic orientation aspects.

Follow-up meetings with the supervising team will be organised on a regular basis (between 1 and 2 meetings per month). Informal discussions and meetings at the request of the doctoral student and/or supervisors will also be possible to meet specific needs. The doctoral student will also be asked to present his work to the rest of the ePOP team during the monthly team meetings, in order to benefit from an external viewpoint and to exchange on the scientific and technical issues he encounters.
