Engineering Manager – Ubuntu Core Canonical is an open‑source leader delivering the Ubuntu operating system to enterprise and technology markets, including cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. With 1200+ colleagues across 75+ countries, we design and ship cutting‑edge software for the IoT market. We are hiring an Engineering Manager to shape the embedded Linux experience on the smallest, most secure systems in the IoT landscape. The role demands deep technical skill and the ability to inspire and drive high‑performing teams. Responsibilities Build and lead a distributed team of software developers across ARM, RISC‑V, and x86 architectures. Contribute engineering skill and demonstrate sound engineering principles toward team goals. Coach, mentor, and facilitate career development for team members. Set and manage expectations with other engineering teams, senior management, and external stakeholders. Advocate modern agile practices and evangelize robust engineering and organizational standards. Participate in leadership team and collaborative initiatives across the organization. Qualifications Proven experience in embedded software development. Strong skills in Go, C++, and Shell scripting. Deep understanding of Linux; preference for experience with Debian or Ubuntu. Track record of mentoring and growing people. Strong planning and execution ability delivering high‑quality software on schedule. Experience with agile development environments. Excellent written and spoken English with strong presentation skills. Undergraduate degree in a technical subject or a compelling alternative path. Nice‑to‑Have Skills Familiarity with immutable Linux distributions, especially Ubuntu Core. Experience with multiple CPU architectures such as ARM and RISC‑V. Knowledge of Linux native containerization and security. What We Offer Distributed work environment with twice‑yearly in‑person sprints.
