NoOffer DescriptionThe researcher will be responsible for establishing up-to-date reference databases on plant and animal substances that may have been exploited in ancient times in West Africa. At the same time, they will research the molecular constituents preserved in archaeological ceramics as part of the RainForStory research project on the emergence and spread of agriculture in the tropical forests of the Congo Basin, funded by the French National Research Agency. Finally, the researcher will be required to establish protocols for the detection of starch in archaeological ceramics.Activities include: establishing collaborations with members of the RainforStory project, developing a strategy for implementing the actualist reference system, selecting archaeological ceramics for study, preparing samples for the extraction of lipids and possibly small acids, and for starch research, analysing them using separation and structural methods, interpreting analytical data and processing it statistically. Sampling missions will be carried out in the field in Africa and the results will be presented in oral communications at seminars or conferences and in international scientific articles.The researcher will work at CEPAM, a joint research unit of the CNRS and Université Côte d'Azur located on the Saint-Jean-d'Angély campus in Nice, in collaboration with the lipidomics team at IPMC located on the Sophia Antipolis campus. He/she will prepare samples at CEPAM and analyse/process data at CEPAM and IPMC. As the position is part of an interdisciplinary project team, assignments will be carried out in France and Africa to collect samples, for work missions or to present results at conferences.An interdisciplinary profile is expected. The necessary skills are as follows: laboratory practices for the preparation and analysis of organic archaeological samples, theoretical knowledge of lipidomics, good knowledge of archaeological issues related to the exploitation of natural substances and the function of ceramics. Experience in archaeological or ethnoarchaeological fieldwork in West Africa would also be welcome. Finally, an interest in botany to develop the identification of starch grains will be an asset in the desired profile. Fluency in spoken and written English is essential. #J-18808-Ljbffr
