Computational scientist in coherent X-ray imaging The European Synchrotron (ESRF) is an international research centre based in Grenoble, France, supported by 19 countries. It is a top research facility that produces intense X‑ray beams used by thousands of scientists every year. Supported by 19 countries, the ESRF is an equal opportunity employer and encourages diversity. The Extremely Brilliant Source upgrade has doubled the coherent X‑ray flux, benefiting techniques such as coherent diffraction imaging, holo‑tomography, and ptychography. Your work will focus on software development and algorithms that exploit coherent beams, including far‑field and near‑field imaging, GPU acceleration, and machine learning. Responsibilities Support ESRF beamlines exploiting coherent X‑ray imaging techniques. Conduct an original research project exploiting coherent X‑ray imaging in collaboration with beamline scientists, developing novel techniques or algorithms to better exploit the EBS‑enhanced coherent photon flux. Qualifications PhD (or equivalent) in Physics, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related scientific field. Post‑doctoral experience is an advantage. Strong programming skills in Python for optimisation and reconstruction algorithms; knowledge of GPU programming (CUDA, OpenCL) is a plus. Experience in data analysis using machine learning. Hands‑on experience with synchrotron‑based X‑ray imaging. A solid background in the natural sciences or mathematics. Curiosity, strong communication skills, and ability to collaborate with engineers and scientists across various techniques and beamlines. Proficiency in English, the working language at the ESRF. Temporary contract of 5 years. The salary will be calculated on the basis of relevant qualifications and professional experience. What we offer Join an innovative international research institute with a workforce from 38 different countries. Collaborate with global experts to advance science and address societal challenges. Live in Grenoble, a vibrant city in the heart of the Alps and Europe's Green Capital 2022. Enjoy a workplace designed to support your quality of life. Benefit from competitive compensation and allowances, including financial support for relocation. The ESRF is an equal opportunity employer and encourages applications from disabled persons.
