By combining traditional codicological approaches with advanced digital imaging technologies (3D imaging, photogrammetry, RTI), Co3Dicology explores the material structure of manuscripts from the early Middle Ages to the Gothic period.
This project focuses on technical developments in bookbinding, breaks in manufacturing practices, and the emergence of monastic and secular production, highlighting the working methods of book craftsmen. It also aims to democratise the analysis of bookbinding structures by developing an interactive digital platform and integrating the data collected into the IRHT's BIBALE database. The objective is to document and analyse approximately 800 medieval bindings preserved in France, in collaboration with numerous partner heritage libraries. Co3Dicology is based on a consortium of researchers and engineers from Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University (HiCSA) and the Institut de Recherche et d'Histoire des Textes (IRHT-CNRS), with the support of an imaging service provider and several heritage libraries.
Engineer's tasks The successful candidate's main tasks will be: To participate in the development of an RTI imaging tool adapted to medieval bindings\ To use 3D imaging techniques to capture the structural elements of 800 bindings. Contribute to the logistical organisation of field missions (planning, transport of equipment, coordination with partner libraries).
