OverviewSoftware Engineering Manager - Sustaining Engineering at Canonical. Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems. This globally remote role leads one regional Sustaining Engineering team and reports to the Director of Sustaining Engineering. The Sustaining Engineering team continuously improves open source software by resolving defects reported by customers, spanning from the kernel to user space applications and IaaS platforms.ResponsibilitiesManage and lead a distributed team of engineersHire, coach, mentor, provide feedback, and offer career development guidanceManage & measure key performance indicators (KPIs) and trainingSupport timely delivery of bug fixes, patches, and other technical solutions across technology fields including Ubuntu, OpenStack, Ceph, Kubernetes, Juju & MAASDemonstrate Canonical values in customer interactionsSet and manage expectations with other engineering teams, senior management, and external stakeholdersAdvocate and advance modern software development practicesFoster a healthy, collaborative engineering culture aligned with company valuesCollaborate with other teams in the organizationWork from home with global travel up to 10% for internal and external eventsWhat we are looking forProfessional software delivery experience using C, C++, Go, Python, or similarStrong knowledge and passion for software developmentLeadership experience organizing and prioritizing complex problem resolution and bug fixesExperience with version control systems such as gitExperience with debugging tools such as gdb, crash or equivalentsStrong commitment to testing methodologies and maintainable code qualityExcellent communication skills in English, both verbal and writtenExperience with Linux, with a preference for UbuntuExperience with Open Source and Open Source business modelsPeople management experience in a support organization is a strong plusWhat we offerDistributed work environment with twice-yearly team sprints in personPersonal learning and development budget of USD 2,000 per yearAnnual compensation reviewRecognition rewardsAnnual holiday leaveMaternity and paternity leaveEmployee Assistance ProgrammeOpportunity to travel to new locations to meet colleaguesTravel upgrades for long-haul company eventsAbout CanonicalCanonical is a pioneering tech firm at the forefront of the global move to open source.
