Ubuntu Linux Kernel Engineer – Silicon Enablement Ubuntu Linux, the world’s most popular Linux distribution, is expanding its support of System On Chip (SoC) platforms and recruiting kernel engineers to help bring Ubuntu to silicon vendors such as NVIDIA, Xilinx, MediaTek, and Qualcomm. Canonical is looking for individuals with a passion for performance‑optimised device drivers, kernel development, and hardware integration. What your day will look like Collaborate regularly and proactively with a globally distributed team. Work closely with silicon vendor partners to integrate their platforms into the Ubuntu Linux kernel. Diagnose and resolve kernel issues reported by partners, customers, the community, or discovered through testing. Deliver silicon‑optimised variants of the Ubuntu Linux kernel worldwide. Improve tooling and automation for kernel delivery and testing. Submit, review, and apply kernel patches, working with both internal and external upstream maintainers. Identify new ways to maximize performance on partner silicon. What we are looking for in you Well‐organised and motivated self‑starter who thrives in a remote work environment. Professional demeanor with colleagues, partners, and the open‑source community. Effective communication in English, both written and verbal. Strong programming ability in C. Solid understanding of device drivers, BSPs, and hardware‑level system engineering. Proficiency with Git. Understanding of operating‑system kernel fundamentals. Willingness to travel twice a year for up to two weeks. Additional skills that you might also bring Python and Bash scripting. Background with major SoC families. Ubuntu/Debian/Snap packaging. Experience with Linux kernel patching and debugging. Understanding of performance optimisation for silicon platforms.
