Software Engineering Manager - Ubuntu Linux Kernel Join Canonical as a Software Engineering Manager leading technical teams that develop, deliver, and maintain all Linux kernels within the Ubuntu Linux distribution. The role will be based worldwide, working from home with a fully distributed team. Overview Canonical is a leading provider of open-source software and operating systems. We hire managers to drive the technical direction and culture of Ubuntu’s kernel teams, ensuring reliable, secure, and high-performance kernel releases for millions of users. Responsibilities Lead a distributed team of software engineers in delivering all Ubuntu Linux kernels. Own specific kernel aspects such as: Work with silicon or cloud partners to implement kernels optimized for diverse hardware platforms. Ensure Ubuntu Linux runs across a wide range of hardware environments. Define and enforce stringent quality control standards for the Ubuntu user community. Mitigate security threats and exploits affecting the Linux kernel. Implement process automation for building, testing, and delivering the kernel. Engage with other Canonical teams, the open-source community, and commercial partners. Qualifications Strong programming experience in C; Python, Go, or similar languages are highly regarded. Substantial exposure to operating system kernel internals and concepts – Linux knowledge highly valued but not mandatory. Demonstrated leadership of a software engineering team. Ability to coordinate cross-functional teams to achieve shared goals. Proficiency with version control (git) and software packaging formats (Ubuntu/Debian/Snap). Excellent written and spoken English with strong presentation skills. Travel internationally up to twice a year for up to two weeks during company events. Nice-to-Have Skills Experience with kernel patching and debugging. Deep knowledge of device drivers, BSPs, and low-level system engineering. Background in driving CI/CD and process automation initiatives. Public involvement in an open-source project. What We Offer Fully distributed work environment with twice-yearly in-person sprints.
