Role overview We are hiring a Ubuntu Core Software Engineer to innovate in the Linux experience for embedded environments with a focus on security and upgradability in IoT. This role suits a software engineer passionate about open source, Linux, security, and developer experience, requiring high technical skill in low-level OS, kernel, and device firmware. Responsibilities Design and implement software across CPU architectures like ARM, RISC-V, and x86, including boot mechanisms, bootloaders, storage, device trees, kernel, and services. Write high-quality, tested code for new features. Debug system-level Linux issues and develop fixes. Collaborate with a distributed team and review peer code. Discuss ideas and develop solutions collaboratively. Integrate diverse bootloaders and maintain gadget snaps. Work remotely with occasional travel (2-4 times a year). Candidate requirements Passion for technology and collaboration. Curiosity, flexibility, articulation, accountability. Soft skills: passionate, enterprising, thoughtful, self-motivated. Bachelor’s or equivalent in Computer Science, STEM, or related field. Experience with C or Golang, Shell scripting. Solid Linux knowledge, preferably Debian or Ubuntu. Experience with Linux-capable devices (e.g., Raspberry Pi). Interest or experience in low-level systems and security (bootloaders, systemd, Linux security features, etc.).
