Linux Software Engineer – Ubuntu for Next‑Gen Silicon Join Canonical to work on Ubuntu’s open‑source stack, optimizing new silicon technologies such as AI accelerators, confidential computing, networking, virtualization and containerization across a range of architectures (x86, ARM, RISC‑V, PowerPC, s390x). The role is globally remote. Key Responsibilities Collaborate proactively within a distributed team. Foster a software ecosystem with a seamless user experience for all Ubuntu users. Evaluate contributions of other engineers to maintain high‑quality software standards. Shape the future of Ubuntu by proposing new ideas and advising on work elsewhere. Collaborate with Ubuntu and Debian communities, upstream projects, and commercially supported customers. Debug issues in open‑source code and team‑maintained code. Assist customers in integrating their apps, SDKs, building OS images, and optimizing applications with Ubuntu Core, Desktop, and Server. Maintain Ubuntu, silicon features, and silicon‑optimized packages across platforms: servers, HPC & AI systems, IoT devices, PCs, SmartNICs, automotive systems, AI stacks, graphics/audio/media stacks, virtualization & containers, hardware enablement stacks, new architectures, toolchains, package management, and platform security (secure boot, FDE, Ubuntu Core, Confidential Computing). Work from home with global travel for internal events 2–4 weeks a year. What We Are Looking For Exceptional academic track record. Undergraduate degree in a technical subject or a compelling narrative showing an alternative path. Passion for technology and collaboration with brilliant people. Curious, flexible, articulate, accountable; strong soft‑skills. Ability to build partnerships with diverse internal and external groups. Strong fundamentals in C, C++ and Python. Experience or interest in Linux distribution packaging. Experience or interest in open‑source maintenance/contribution and licensing. Fundamental understanding of package management and dependency resolution. Additional Skills That You Might Also Bring Experience with graphics, audio, or multimedia stacks; virtualization & containers (Docker, OCI, Kubernetes); hardware enablement (SmartNICs, NVMe, GPUs, audio, sensors); performance optimization; toolchain development; networking protocols (TCP/IP, DHCP, HTTP/REST); security best practices; IoT & embedded systems (board‑level hardware, SoCs, bootloaders, firmware, OS, applications, services).
