OverviewA 2-year post-doctoral position is available at LEGOS (Laboratoire d’Etudes en Géophysique et Océanographie Spatiales) in Toulouse. The post is associated with the theoretical part of the TEASAO project (Turbulence Effects on Active Species in Atmosphere and Ocean) and may be extended up to one additional year.Interested candidates should email the contact(s) below with a CV and the names and contact details of 2 referees. There is no formal deadline for applications, but a decision is hoped to be made in September.Salary ranges from about 2000 to 2600 euros, depending on research experience.ResponsibilitiesConduct theoretical studies on vertical redistribution of passive or reactive tracers by turbulence in geophysical fluids.Establish a scientific protocol addressing the problem based on non-hydrostatic numerical modelling, starting with the development of Kelvin–Helmholtz instability.Study other turbulence types (breaking of internal waves, convection, etc.) as progress allows.Participate in educational activities based on laboratory experiments.QualificationsExpertise in mixing processes and non-hydrostatic numerical modelling.Knowledge of geophysical fluid dynamics.Excellent knowledge of programming in FORTRAN.Knowledge of Matlab for post-processing of data and production of synthetic results and plots.Creativity, enthusiasm for science and research, and ability to work within a team.About the TEASAO projectThe TEASAO project (Turbulence Effects on Active Species in Atmosphere and Ocean) is funded by Toulouse IDEX and involves collaboration with Peter Haynes, University of Cambridge (UK), as a Visiting Professor. The project aims to understand and model the effect of small-scale turbulence and vertical mixing on the evolution of chemical or biological species in both the ocean and the atmosphere and its large-scale implications. This work relates to societal issues such as freshwater resources, air or water quality, pollution spread, and marine primary production and fisheries.One scientific goal is to build a common framework to address theoretical aspects of the evolution of active tracers in turbulent stratified flows, including their distribution along density classes. Data and more realistic applications will be provided by ocean (e.g., plankton growth along an upwelling front) and atmosphere studies (turbulence, mixing, and microphysics interactions in the tropical tropopause layer).NotesCurrent opportunities and related events referenced in the original posting are not reproduced here.
