The Role We’re looking for a Backend Software Engineer with a strong knowledge about video and streaming to help us extend the interoperability and robustness of our video‑intelligence platform. You’ll join the Citadel team, responsible for bridging operational video sources (VMS, cameras, archives) with our AI analysis and investigation tools. Your work will ensure that our backend can ingest, synchronize, and serve high‑volume video data from heterogeneous environments. This role is perfect for an engineer who enjoys working close to the media layer, designing clean APIs and services that connect real‑world video infrastructure with intelligent analytics. Key Responsibilities Design and implement backend services for video ingestion, synchronization, and retrieval, ensuring compatibility with both cloud and on‑prem deployments. Integrate with third‑party VMS platforms (Genetec, Milestone, etc.) via APIs to manage streams, recordings, and events. Develop and maintain media interfaces handling RTSP, ONVIF, and HTTP‑based video sources. Build REST APIs to expose video resources and metadata to downstream systems (AI pipeline, investigator frontend). Collaborate with ML and Frontend teams to ensure seamless playback, annotation, and alert correlation experiences. Monitor and optimize performance, latency, and bandwidth utilization for both live and recorded video. Contribute to the architecture and scalability of our video backend, including storage, caching, and proxy layers. Maintain rigorous standards for testing, documentation, and operational observability. Profile 5+ years of experience in backend development (Python, Go, or similar). Strong understanding of video streaming protocols and architectures (RTSP, HLS, ONVIF). Experience integrating or extending VMS systems through SDKs or APIs. Familiarity with media servers and transcoding pipelines (GStreamer, FFmpeg, WebRTC). Proficiency with Linux systems, Dockerized deployments, and CI/CD pipelines. Good understanding of network performance, authentication, and security in video environments. Pragmatic, autonomous, and comfortable designing reliable software for production environments. Bonus points for: Experience with distributed video storage, event indexing, or multi‑tenant video systems. Knowledge of computer vision / video analytics APIs. Prior exposure to public safety, defense, or security operations. Experience building APIs for visualization tools.
