Software Engineering Manager - Ubuntu Linux Kernel Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems to the global enterprise and technology markets. Our platform, Ubuntu, is widely used in breakthrough enterprise initiatives such as public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. We are hiring Software Engineering Managers to lead technical teams in the delivery and ongoing support of all Linux kernels provided by the Ubuntu Linux distribution. This role will work remotely from any location. Responsibilities Lead a distributed team of software engineers in your region in delivery of all Linux kernels for the Ubuntu distribution. Take ownership of specific areas such as kernel optimisation for silicon or cloud partners, hardware platform support, quality control standards, security threat mitigation, and process automation for build, test, and delivery. Engage with other Canonical teams, the open source community, and commercial partners. Qualifications Significant programming experience in C, with Python/Golang or similar languages. Experience with OS kernel internals and concepts. Demonstrated experience managing or leading a team of software engineers. Ability to coordinate across multiple teams. Familiarity with version control (git) and software packaging formats, preferably Ubuntu/Debian/Snap. Professional written and spoken English with excellent presentation skills. Willingness to travel internationally twice a year up to two weeks. Nice‑to‑Have Kernel patching and debugging experience. Strong grasp of device drivers, BSPs, and low‑level system engineering. Experience with CI/CD and process automation initiatives. Public involvement with an open source project. Benefits Remote work worldwide; no office requirement.
