Nuclear Propulsion Officer Aspirant

The Nuclear Propulsion Officer Aspirant (NPOA) role within the "operations" sector offers recent graduates or students from BAC+2 an opportunity to engage with the French Navy for a year in the operations domain, focusing on six key specialties: watch officer, assistant watch officer on submarines, support for commando unit operations, support for mine warfare operations, support for naval aviation operations, and mechanical engineering.

Institution Overview:

Across the globe's oceans and seas, sailors are dedicated to safeguarding and securing French maritime interests, operating continuously throughout the year. They undertake missions that encompass intelligence gathering, prevention, intervention, protection, and deterrence, both at sea and on land.

Position Environment:

The nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines (SSBN) form a critical part of the strategic nuclear forces. The deployment of an SSBN ensures readiness to respond to any presidential command should vital national interests be at risk. These submarines are equipped with cutting-edge technology and maintain exceptional stealth capabilities, functioning as autonomous operational bases.

Operational Cycle Includes:

  • Simulator training period;
  • Ship maintenance phase;
  • 9 to 10-week patrol duration;
  • Support period for the second crew during maintenance;
  • Leave period.

Key Responsibilities:

As part of the ship's crew, the Nuclear Propulsion Officer Aspirant will collaborate within the ship's team (propulsion, diving safety, classic safety, and onboard viability systems). Their schedule at sea will focus on two primary objectives:

  • Understanding the submarine's operations and systems;
  • Executing effective roles within the submarine's organizational structure.

This role may involve assisting the officer responsible for diving safety or supporting health and safety protocols. Depending on training schedules, they may also qualify to serve as Central Master.

Objective of the Year:

The aim of this year is to solidify the volunteer's commitment to pursuing a career as a contracted officer (OSC) and to prepare for the OSC admission course in a conducive environment.

The volunteer will have the chance to specialize in the "Nuclear Energy" sector, leading to training as a nuclear boiler engineer.

Compensation:

  • The basic salary is approximately 910€ per month, subject to adjustments based on personal and professional circumstances;
  • Free accommodation and meals are provided;
  • Eligibility for activity allowances may be available depending on resources;
  • SNCF benefits include a 75% discount for personal travel;
  • Additional bonuses may be offered based on assignments.

Candidate Profile:

Students or recent graduates seeking leadership experience or an adventure at sea must meet the following criteria:

  • Age between 17 and 26 at the time of application;
  • Hold a minimum of Bac+2 to Bac+5 (general or specialized engineering degree, scientific university degree);
  • Possess necessary medical, physical, and psychological qualifications for the desired specialty;
  • Demonstrate proficiency in languages, particularly English.

Prerequisites:

  • French nationality;
  • Physically and medically fit;
  • Completion of the Defense and Citizenship Day;
  • Able to swim;
  • Age under 26 at the time of application.

Recruitment Process:

  • Online application submission;
