Overview:
Production Practices is an emerging team within our Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) division, dedicated to ensuring production readiness and assisting engineers in adopting optimal practices related to reliability and operational excellence. We advocate for engineers to enhance the overall developer experience in building resilient services at Datadog, while also supporting the organization by identifying, monitoring, and mitigating systemic reliability risks.
Key Responsibilities:
- Guide the company towards production readiness by establishing the technical framework for dependable and sustainable production methodologies.
- Conduct readiness assessments for new services upon their production launch and develop software to automate this process.
- Collaborate with various teams across Datadog to assist them in implementing best practices that foster resilience and operational excellence. This includes facilitating training workshops on SRE concepts and creating reliability bulletins that address specific engineering challenges.
- Identify obstacles faced by engineers operating services in production and advocate on their behalf by developing streamlined processes and tools to promote healthy production practices. Work alongside other infrastructure teams to enhance the developer experience and reduce the challenges associated with launching services.
- Assist the organization in recognizing, tracking, and addressing emerging risks. Participate in cross-functional teams as needed to tackle complex reliability issues.
- Partner with the Chaos Engineering team during large-scale simulations that involve introducing faults into our system. Follow up with engineering teams post-event to ensure risks are identified and corrective actions are implemented.
Qualifications:
- Approximately 5 years of experience with distributed systems. Much of our work involves evaluating unfamiliar services prior to their launch, thus we depend on our team's strong systems thinking and familiarity with common production patterns.
- A strong passion for training and enhancing the skills of others. We strive to build resilience by disseminating best practices, so prior experience in teaching or creating developer documentation is advantageous.
- Proficient coding skills in Go and/or Python. We aim to automate as many manual processes as possible and leverage code to amplify our impact.
- Strong empathy, collaboration, and communication skills in English to effectively work remotely with cross-functional teams. Our objective is to enhance the developer experience of launching and managing services in production, necessitating a genuine understanding of others' perspectives drawn from real-world experience.
- A willingness to engage with new codebases and unfamiliar systems and quickly acclimate. We seek individuals who are excited by challenges and utilize their determination to navigate and clarify ambiguity.
