Job Title: Instrumentation Software Engineer

Company: ESRF

The Detector & Electronics Group within the Instrumentation Services and Development Division focuses on the advancement and support of X-ray detection systems and control electronics essential for experimental setups and accelerator operations. The Instrumentation Software Services team (ISS) plays a crucial role in providing development capabilities and supporting software-related services for various instrumentation projects, including embedded software, development tools, and laboratory testing and calibration applications. This team collaborates closely with the two primary units of the group: the Detector Unit and the Electronics Unit.

As an Instrumentation Software Engineer, you will become an integral part of the ISS team, working collaboratively with all members of the Detector & Electronics Group on a variety of technical challenges and projects. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential for success in this role. A solid understanding of scientific instrumentation operations will be vital for achieving a high degree of independence.

The responsibilities of the Instrumentation Software Engineer include:

Designing and enhancing software solutions and development tools for instrumentation Contributing to the documentation and upkeep of group tools and applications Providing software expertise in multidisciplinary projects Offering guidance, training, and support in software-related issues to fellow engineers Overseeing the technical contributions of temporary staff, such as students or interns

Expected qualifications

A higher university degree (Master's or equivalent, offering 300 ECTS) in software engineering, physics, instrumentation, or a related field At least 5 years of experience in software engineering with a focus on instrumentation Proficient in software development tools with strong programming skills in Python and C Experience in developing high-level applications Familiarity with version control systems and integrated development environments Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities A commitment to delivering high-quality service A collaborative mindset and ability to work effectively in a team Strong organizational skills and proficiency in documentation Capability to manage time effectively and prioritize tasks Critical thinking and problem-solving aptitude
