The International Water Management Institute (IWMI), a CGIAR Research Center, is on the lookout for an innovative and versatile professional to fill the role of Communications Specialist.
In this position, the Communications Specialist will play a crucial role in executing IWMI's global strategies and operational plans within the region. Collaborating closely with the Country Representative, the successful candidate will create engaging content and facilitate events and campaigns that align with established quality standards and guidelines, incorporating insights from project leaders and researchers. This role also involves supporting the Nepal team in producing knowledge products and organizing forums, ensuring a diverse range of perspectives and interdisciplinary approaches.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in the execution of IWMI's global strategies and operational plans in the region, in partnership with the Country Representative and the Communications & Knowledge Management team at headquarters.
- Develop and implement quarterly and annual work plans that reflect IWMI's priorities.
- Engage in regular meetings with the Communications & Knowledge Management team to ensure alignment and coordination for content and events.
- Support the organization and participation in national and regional events (such as conferences, forums, and workshops). Prepare communication strategies and key messages in advance, collaborating with project leaders and researchers. Provide media support during events and document outcomes through articles and other materials.
- Write and edit various communication materials (including news articles, press releases, and success stories) for IWMI's global platforms and publications.
- Create strategic and audience-focused communication outputs (such as briefs, presentations, and reports) that promote IWMI's objectives.
- Prepare and manage social media content for IWMI's official accounts, including country-specific platforms.
- Collaborate with IWMI project leaders and researchers in Nepal to identify potential content and outreach materials, ensuring technical accuracy.
- Engage with partners and stakeholders for the development of project communication materials.
- Build relationships with national and regional media, organizing press events and facilitating proactive media outreach.
- Maintain a comprehensive list of media contacts for targeted outreach efforts.
- Enhance IWMI's global contact list by encouraging stakeholders to subscribe to updates.
- Oversee the production of high-quality video content and photographic documentation of IWMI activities.
- Manage the engagement of consultants for various communications-related tasks, ensuring timely and quality deliverables.
- Ensure adherence to IWMI branding guidelines and visibility requirements set by funders.
- Assist in implementing internal communication strategies as needed.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of communication activities in the region.
- Perform any additional tasks as prioritized by the Country Representative or the Global Communications Lead.
Qualifications and Experience:
Essential:
- A Master's degree in mass communications, journalism, international development, or a related field.
- A minimum of 8 years of relevant professional experience.
- Proven experience in designing and implementing communication and knowledge management plans.
- Experience in organizing multi-stakeholder engagement events.
- Skills in presentation and event facilitation.
Desirable:
- Understanding of water security and development issues.
- Experience in research organizations or interdisciplinary research-for-development programs.
- Familiarity with international work environments.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Essential:
- Exceptional writing and editing skills in English and Nepali.
- Proficiency in Microsoft 365 and digital tools.
- Multimedia skills, including photography and video production.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to communicate complex concepts clearly to diverse audiences.
- Strong interpersonal skills and cultural sensitivity.
- Awareness of diversity, inclusion, and gender issues.
- Willingness to travel to field locations with limited facilities.
Benefits:
This position is open to Nepali nationals only. IWMI offers a competitive salary and benefits package, including health and life insurance, as well as long-term disability coverage. The initial contract duration is three years, with the possibility of extension.
