About the Position
This PhD position is part of the Nokia-Inria Federated Learning Challenge, hosted within the MARACAS team at CITI Laboratory (a joint venture between Inria and INSA-Lyon). You will be supervised by Dr. Malcolm Egan and Prof. Jean-Marie Gorce (MARACAS), alongside Dr. Alberto Conte and Marie-Line Alberia Morel (Networks Systems and Security Research, Nokia Bell Labs).
MARACAS is a research group of approximately 15 individuals, including PhD students, postdocs, and research engineers. Our focus lies in the theory, algorithms, and experimentation for communication systems, developing and applying methods in information theory, statistical signal processing, and machine learning.
Project Focus
The Inria-Nokia Federated Learning Challenge aims to develop federated and decentralized learning architectures and algorithms for future generation wireless communication systems. Federated learning enables model estimation (e.g., training of deep neural networks) without directly transferring client data to a central server. Instead, clients estimate local models and exchange parameters or gradients with the server, significantly reducing communication requirements and enhancing privacy.
This PhD position will explore two key questions:
- How do constraints imposed by realistic wireless communication links affect state-of-the-art federated learning methods?
- How can massive multiple access communications (e.g., coding, resource allocation, and signal processing) be optimized for advanced federated learning algorithms?
To address these questions, we will investigate the impact of wireless communication on the convergence of existing federated learning algorithms. We will also develop new resource allocation, compression, and coding schemes to mitigate errors arising from wireless communications.
Responsibilities
- Analyze the convergence of state-of-the-art federated learning methods in the context of emerging 6G wireless communication systems.
- Develop innovative coding, resource allocation, and compression schemes to minimize the impact of errors introduced by wireless communications.
Qualifications
- Strong foundation in optimization theory, probability theory/statistics, and wireless communications.
- Familiarity with stochastic optimization algorithms and their convergence theory is highly desirable.
