The Bureau of Technology (BoT) is the core of Back Market's operations. It comprises over 30 vibrant product teams focused on developing and managing services that deliver substantial value to our customers and suppliers. These teams are bolstered by our Platform group, which includes more than 10 specialized teams addressing overarching technical challenges to enhance our operational efficiency.

In addition to functional teams, we have established various groups dedicated to knowledge sharing across different technical fields, including security, backend, frontend, AI, and mobile. These groups act as collaborative hubs for professional development, offering numerous learning opportunities and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

Our staff engineers play a crucial role across the organization, providing expertise in various domains. They offer leadership and technical guidance, promoting alternative career pathways for growth beyond conventional management roles.

As a Lead Backend Developer , you will collaborate closely with all squad members and the Staff engineer of your group. Regular bi-monthly meetings with your group and the Backend Chapter will facilitate the exchange of successful strategies, learning from others, and ensuring your technical direction aligns with the overall vision.

Key Technical Challenges

Traditionally reliant on a monolithic architecture, Back Market's technical stack is undergoing a significant transformation towards a distributed and service-oriented architecture. This evolution presents an opportunity to modernize the platform and elevate engineering standards.

One of the primary challenges ahead is to construct a suite of efficient and loosely coupled services. Teams are eager to independently manage their release schedules, data, SLAs, tools, and ultimately, their service offerings. Concurrently, Platform teams are focused on delivering a scalable, consistent, and secure platform that enhances the productivity of engineering teams.

As a Lead Backend Developer, your challenges will include:

We are seeking a Lead Backend Developer to assist in constructing and operating a set of efficient, high-cohesion, low-coupling services with security and privacy integrated from the outset to support business growth.

You will operate in an agile 'build it and run it' environment where engineering teams are responsible for building, launching, monitoring, and supporting the products they own.

We value passion for creating systems through clean, consistent, and well-organized code. Additionally, being a supportive team player who fosters a learning and sharing environment is essential.

Proficiency in English is essential as you will be part of an international team distributed across various locations worldwide.

Key Responsibilities as a Senior Engineer I: Produce, Innovate & Share
  • Facilitate meaningful discussions around complex issues.
  • Propose or implement enhancements for existing designs and architecture for quarterly projects or mission-critical areas within your squad.
  • Investigate technologies with significant potential impact on the team.
  • Actively contribute to high-impact chaos mitigation efforts.
Key Responsibilities as a Senior Engineer II: Deliver, Advocate & Coordinate
  • Collaborate across the BoT to document and design system interactions.
  • Master the technical scope of your domain(s).
  • Actively engage in defining your squad's roadmap for the upcoming six months.
  • Establish and promote best practices, sharing knowledge through training sessions.
  • Take proactive ownership of transversal initiatives.
  • Operate with a full level of autonomy, guided by management directions.
