Context and Advantages of the Position
You will be part of the ASTRA team, a joint research team between Inria and Valeo, led by Fawzi Nashashibi and Benazouz Bradai. The team focuses on designing models and algorithms for intelligent transportation systems, with several projects financed by the French National Research Agency.
The PhD thesis will explore decision-making and planning for automated driving using reinforcement learning (RL). You will investigate how autonomous vehicles make decisions and plan their actions while considering safety, comfort constraints, and interactions with other road users.
Research Objectives
The general objective of the PhD thesis is to develop an RL-based decision-making and planning framework for automated driving systems. This will involve:
- Developing an RL-based decision-making and planning framework for automated driving systems.
- Optimizing driving policies using RL algorithms to ensure safety, efficiency, and adaptability.
- Evaluating the performance of the proposed RL system through simulations and real-world testing.
Main Activities
Main activities will include:
- Research
- Writing scientific papers
- Presenting work at scientific conferences

- Data management and curation
- Interacting with partners (scientists, engineers)
- Writing a doctoral thesis
- Participating in demonstrations and showcases
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will have:
- A Master's Degree in a relevant field
- A strong background in machine learning, particularly reinforcement learning
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python and C++
- A solid understanding of robotic systems and control challenges
- Familiarity with automated vehicles simulation environments
- Experience in developing control algorithms or motion planning strategies for autonomous vehicles
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team
Language
The working language is English, but knowledge of French is optional but desirable.
