We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated individual to join our team as a Building Inspector. As a key member of our public service team, you will be responsible for ensuring compliance with municipal codes and regulations in the review and inspection of existing residential and non-residential structures, new building construction, site improvements, and violations.
Key Responsibilities- Lead and coordinate the review of submittals for permit applications, ensuring timely and accurate processing.
- Conduct thorough plan reviews for all types of construction, including reviewing, coordinating, compiling, and transmitting staff plan review comments.
- Perform inspections of buildings, other structures, and site improvements to ensure conformity to approved permit plans, codes, and zoning regulations.
- Conduct final inspections of buildings, structures, and site improvements, verifying compliance with municipal codes and regulations.
- Communicate effectively with contractors, tenants, and property owners, addressing issues related to housing, building, zoning, and site improvement inspection.
- Maintain accurate records of work performed and prepare written reports, providing valuable insights for future improvements.
- Investigate and take necessary action on complaints involving construction, zoning, and property maintenance, ensuring public safety and well-being.
- Issue citations and testify in court as needed, upholding the law and protecting the public interest.
- Support other City departments/divisions in emergency situations, such as snow plowing, demonstrating a commitment to public service.
- High school diploma or equivalent, with an associate's degree in construction, engineering, or a related field preferred.
- Five years of experience in a construction-related position, including field experience, and three years managing projects.
- Ability to read and interpret building construction plans, ensuring accurate and efficient processing.
- International Code Council (ICC) Certification in the appropriate field of construction or obtain within one year of hire.
- Knowledge of municipal ordinances, codes, and regulations, as well as the materials, methods, and practices used in building construction.
- Effective oral and written communication skills, with the ability to explain and interpret codes to contractors, tenants, and property owners.
- Ability to use MS Outlook, Word, Excel, and input data into the City's permit tracking system, as well as use GIS.
- Work under varying environmental conditions, lifting up to 20 pounds, and performing inspections that require climbing, bending, and fitting into tight spaces.
- On-call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with a valid Class A CDL and appropriate endorsements, or acquire within 6 months of hire.
