Join the Group Underwriting Office Department (GUO)
The newly established Global Chief Underwriting Office is responsible for driving profitability and growth through strategic product underwriting, portfolio design, and technical underwriting excellence in collaboration with AXA entities for both Commercial and Retail sectors. Key functions include:

Your Job and Daily Responsibilities:
Job Purpose
The P&C Retail Operations Underwriting Specialist focuses on the operational aspects of underwriting within retail operations. Key responsibilities include:
- Overseeing operational underwriting activities within retail entities, ensuring compliance with underwriting guidelines and best practices.
- Collaborating with entities to optimize operational underwriting processes and requests, enhancing alignment between central functions for improved efficiency.
- Assisting entities in developing detailed reports and operational underwriting procedures as part of portfolio performance evaluations, utilizing existing performance tools.
- Monitoring and managing portfolio profitability based on operational needs, emphasizing operational underwriting performance metrics.
- Enhancing discount management and sales strategies at the operational level, incorporating customer and intermediary insights to boost underwriting effectiveness.
- Minimizing underwriting leakage and conducting distribution coverage analyses at the operational level to drive improvements.
- Implementing advanced operational underwriting methodologies and models, integrating commercial perspectives into pricing strategies for rapid market feedback.
- Leveraging internal and external data, including innovative technologies, for operational underwriting within retail operations.

The P&C Retail sector is a crucial component of the Group, contributing significantly to both Underlying Earnings (>33% of total) and customer base (20m+). While each market presents unique dynamics, regulations, and challenges, the fundamental requirements for retail business remain consistent, primarily encompassing motor, home, and travel insurance.
Currently, motor insurance serves as the 'anchor' product within the industry. In the mid-term, potential commoditization and technological advancements (e.g., electric vehicles, autonomous cars) may lead to a contraction in the private motor market, possibly affecting profitability.
Furthermore, the customer experience is often overly complex, with P&C insurers facing challenges in cultivating long-term, meaningful relationships with customers due to factors such as low interaction frequency, lack of differentiation, increasing commoditization, and price pressures. Consequently, a significant portion of the P&C Retail business stands at a strategic crossroads, exacerbated by evolving supply and demand trends that necessitate the integration of existing value chains to address specific customer needs, leading to the emergence of ecosystems.
Additionally, external challenges such as claims inflation, climate change developments, and shifts in customer behavior are impacting the profitability of this business segment.
Key Accountabilities
As an Operational Underwriting Specialist for P&C Retail, your primary responsibility is to ensure technical excellence in retail underwriting across global entities, supporting their growth and profitability. This involves actively engaging with monthly KPIs to guide, challenge, and assist entities in identifying potential budget deviations. Your key activities will include:
- Implementing a cutting-edge underwriting approach and model.
- Participating in In-Depth Reviews (IDR) & Technical Reviews (TR) relevant to your responsibilities.
- Providing detailed reports for portfolio performance evaluations, leveraging existing performance tools.
- Launching profit or premium recovery initiatives based on monitoring outcomes.
- Overseeing and managing portfolio profitability.
- Enhancing discount management and sales strategies at the entity level.
- Reducing underwriting leakage.
- Utilizing internal and external data, including innovative technologies, and analyzing data from various entities to inform specific actions.
- Collaborating closely with cross-functional teams to develop a comprehensive understanding of cycle management.
Main Competencies and Experiences
To be successful in this role, you should possess a solid understanding of underwriting cycles and related topics, including tariff calculations, technical pricing, discounting rules, and risk appetite definitions. Experience in customer and distributor management is also essential.
The ideal candidate will have approximately 5 years of underwriting experience in retail lines of business, along with a general knowledge of retail insurance products and client segments. Experience in reinsurance, project management, and navigating complex environments is advantageous. Required soft skills include structured argumentation to effectively communicate ideas, high-level presentation skills for senior management, agility in a multifaceted P&C landscape, a customer-centric approach, and strong negotiation abilities.
