Aquatic Food Systems Research Leader

About WorldFish

WorldFish is a prominent global research institution dedicated to revolutionizing aquatic food systems to alleviate hunger, malnutrition, and poverty. The organization collaborates with various international, regional, and national partners to co-create and implement scientific advancements, provide evidence for policy-making, and disseminate knowledge to ensure equitable and inclusive benefits for millions reliant on fish for their livelihoods. As a member of CGIAR, WorldFish plays a vital role in fostering a food- and nutrition-secure future while restoring natural resources.

About the Position

Since 2022, WorldFish has been structured into two primary Science Units: Aquatic Food Biosciences and Aquatic Food Systems, each encompassing four research teams focused on critical thematic and disciplinary pathways aimed at enhancing aquatic food systems for sustainable development. These eight research teams are aligned to generate impact across three key domains: climate and environmental sustainability, gender and social inclusion, and nutrition and public health. This matrix structure promotes extensive collaboration while maintaining a clear focus on research outcomes and impacts. A significant aspect of this role involves providing intellectual leadership and coordination for research activities and personnel within the inclusive markets development theme.

Aquatic foods cater to a variety of markets, ranging from local to global, and from luxury seafood to essential nutrition for vulnerable populations. Millions of individuals, predominantly women, are engaged in fish marketing, covering all stages from purchasing and processing aquatic foods at landing sites and farm gates to food preparation and retail at the final point of sale. The inclusive markets research team at WorldFish, in collaboration with partners, seeks to identify, characterize, innovate, and scale market systems that are sustainable, equitable, and efficient. The successful candidate will contribute to this research by providing intellectual leadership and coordination across the organization's funded projects in this area. Currently, the research team is small, consisting of four to five members, and is working on several projects, but this area is poised for growth under effective leadership.

Markets are inherently 'socially embedded,' and our efforts aim to ensure that aquatic food markets remain central and responsive to the aspirations and cultures of the communities where aquatic foods are vital components of livelihood systems and diets. Our research and innovation initiatives support aquatic food supply chains to include women, youth, and small-scale traders on equitable terms. We empower their dynamism and entrepreneurship by collaborating with them to overcome barriers to livelihood enhancement, identify and promote effective waste and loss reduction strategies, and improve access to market information that enables fair wages and prices while responding to demand fluctuations in often distant markets. Our work also explores sustainable methods to enhance access to innovations in processing and marketing, both technological and institutional, and improve financial access for small-scale aquatic food enterprises, all while safeguarding lower-income consumers' fundamental right to safe, adequate, and nutritious food.

We emphasize inclusion and fairness, particularly in the context of rising production and demand for aquatic foods, with the goal of ensuring that growth in aquatic food markets benefits lower-income and smaller-scale supply chain participants. Our research identifies and supports opportunities for small-scale actors to thrive in trade involving aquatic foods across urban, regional, and global markets. Ultimately, we aim to foster aquatic food markets that effectively direct culturally preferred nutrient-rich foods, produced efficiently with minimal environmental impact, to those who value and require them most for a healthy diet.

Current research, innovation, and scaling efforts in inclusive markets include:

  • Engaging women, youth, and coastal Indigenous Peoples in the production, processing, and marketing of nutrient-rich, climate-adaptive, affordable marine and aquatic foods in various regions.
  • Providing training and financing to enhance the distribution of aquatic foods, thereby supporting the livelihoods of food sector actors, many of whom are women, and improving nutrition for consumers, particularly during the critical 'first 1000 days' of infants' and their mothers' lives.
  • Advancing fish processing techniques to enhance food product health and safety while reducing waste and loss.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide intellectual leadership for the Inclusive Markets research team at WorldFish, which includes collaborating with colleagues across the organization to identify research needs and opportunities within aquatic food value chains and markets, organizing team discussions and meetings, fostering a culture of critical inquiry and research excellence, and mentoring colleagues to enhance organizational research capacity.
  • Conduct research, capacity development, and policy influencing activities in the candidate's areas of expertise within aquatic food markets and supply chains, in partnership with colleagues and National Research Systems in WorldFish focal countries.
  • Identify and cultivate strategic partnerships with public and private sector stakeholders in aquatic food market systems to pursue equity and sustainability objectives.

Requirements

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A PhD degree (preferred) in food systems, particularly aquatic food systems, supply or value chains, natural resource or environmental management, fisheries, aquaculture, or a related field.
  • A strong publication record and thought leadership in aquatic food governance, particularly concerning markets and/or equity and social inclusion issues.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively across diverse disciplines, cultures, and sectors.
  • Excellent coordination, convening, and project management skills.
  • Capacity to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills in English; proficiency in additional languages is a plus.
  • Outstanding cultural competency and interpersonal communication skills; international and intercultural experience is highly valued.

Desirable Skills/Experience

  • A network of partners engaged in aquatic food systems research, development, and governance in the Global South.
  • Skills and qualifications in economic analysis (micro- or macro-economics).
  • Demonstrated success in securing research funding.
