FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION
Under the overall authority of the Assistant Director-General for Education (ADG/ED) and direct supervision from the Chief of Section of Global Citizenship and Peace Education, the incumbent will act as a Programme Specialist for UNESCO's initiatives on global citizenship, peace, and human rights education. The role encompasses the development and execution of a diverse range of activities and projects aligned with the Section's established priorities. The incumbent will coordinate UNESCO's follow-up efforts to the adoption of the Recommendation on Education for Peace, Human Rights, and Sustainable Development, oversee the reporting process, and support countries in their implementation efforts, particularly in educational planning. This may involve designing and coordinating research, as well as developing policy guidance documents in collaboration with various internal and external partners.
Key Responsibilities:
1. In the context of the 2023 Recommendation:
- Develop and advocate for the use of policy and practical guidance on the Recommendation, including tools for target populations.
- Coordinate the reporting process and assist countries in meeting their reporting obligations.
- Design and lead research on relevant issues.
- Facilitate policy learning among countries to enhance implementation.
- Promote the Recommendation through impactful communication efforts.
- Support and maintain the network of country focal points for the Recommendation.
2. In relation to Global Citizenship, Peace, and Human Rights Education:
- Provide strategic direction on UNESCO activities in these domains, focusing on global citizenship and interculturality.
- Guide and monitor the work of regional and field offices, offering technical advice and capacity development resources.
- Support peer learning among countries to enhance action in these areas.
3. Ensure timely and high-quality collaboration with other UNESCO sectors and education-related areas relevant to the role.
4. Contribute to resource mobilization through active involvement in fundraising and project proposal development.
5. Foster strategic partnerships to advance the Section's programmatic work and ensure effective communication of results.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Advanced university degree (Masters or equivalent) in Social or Human Sciences, History, Education, Political Science, or related fields.
Work Experience: Minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible experience in peace and human rights education, civic education, or global citizenship education, with at least 3 years at the international level. Proven experience in project management, policy advice, fundraising, and partnership development.
Skills: Strong understanding of education issues related to global citizenship, analytical skills, strategic planning, and excellent drafting skills in English or French.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Experience with government authorities, civil society organizations, and international education programs. Knowledge of another official UNESCO language is an asset.
