Overview & Position Summary
Thesis Topic: Tailoring Microstructures of Additive Manufacturing through Synchrotron Nano-Imaging
The ID16B beamline specializes in hard X-ray nano-analysis, integrating techniques such as X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), X-ray excited optical luminescence (XEOL), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and advanced 3D/4D X-ray nano-imaging (nano-CT). This facility supports pioneering research across various scientific fields, including earth sciences, life sciences, and materials engineering. The beamline operates over a broad energy spectrum from 6 to 33 keV, routinely achieving beam sizes as small as 50 nm. It is equipped to handle diverse sample environments (such as furnaces, cryostats, and electrochemical cells), enabling exceptional in situ nano-analysis capabilities.
In this role, you will collaborate with the ESRF and the SIMAP laboratory at the University Grenoble Alpes to develop additive manufacturing microstructures that mitigate strain localization. Your responsibilities will include designing various microstructures of aluminum alloys via Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) and conducting in situ 3D nano-imaging tensile tests for characterization. You will also create innovative experimental AI-driven numerical strategies to implement a multi-scale correlation approach. This project aims to significantly advance the design of aluminum alloys for laser powder bed fusion additive manufacturing, focusing on achieving specific mechanical properties.
Candidate Profile
- A degree qualifying for PhD enrollment (e.g., MSc, Master 2 de Recherche, Laurea, or equivalent) in physics, chemistry, materials science, or a closely related field.
- Recommended background in metallurgy and image analysis.
- Programming skills, particularly in Python, are advantageous.
- Proficiency in English is required, as it is the working language at the ESRF.
