The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) is seeking a highly qualified candidate to serve as a Senior Research Fellow (SRF I or SRF II) for a two-year, renewable appointment in its Nutrition, Diets and Health Unit. This position is based at IFPRI headquarters in Washington, D.C. and involves travel to countries where IFPRI conducts research.
Key Responsibilities- Manage complex, multi-partner surveys and evaluations, mentoring junior research staff and leading the development of new research activities.
- Develop proposals for the evaluation of multisectoral programs and food systems approaches to improve diet, nutrition, and health outcomes in low- and middle-income countries.
- Lead research activities related to the CGIAR Research Initiative on Fruit and Vegetables for Sustainable Healthy Diets (FRESH), including co-developing programmatic activities with implementation partners to increase fruit and vegetable intake.
- Conduct research on diets, nutrition, health, and well-being in low- and middle-income countries, analyzing the impact of multisectoral programs and food systems approaches on these outcomes.
- Develop and manage large/complex research projects and programs, including workplans, research coordination, monitoring, and reporting.
- Design and supervise large-scale data collection activities, such as household surveys, food environment surveys, dietary assessment surveys, and nutritional status assessments.
- Supervise research support staff and provide professional mentoring to others.
- Collaborate with program implementation partners and stakeholders to identify and design programmatic activities addressing constraints to sustainable, healthy diets.
- Recruit and manage national collaborators.
- Develop and monitor project or program budgets.
- Publish research in peer-reviewed publications.
- Provide research leadership in developing new ideas into proposals.
- Prepare donor and project/program reports.
- Liaise with donors, senior government officials, and other stakeholders on projects.
- Communicate research to a broad spectrum of stakeholders, including researchers, academics, policymakers, local partners, and the general public.
- PhD in Nutrition, Public Health, Epidemiology, International Development, or a closely related field, with a minimum of 7 years of post-PhD experience for the SRF I level.
- PhD in Nutrition, Public Health, Epidemiology, International Development, or a closely related field, with a minimum of 10 years of post-PhD experience and major external recognition within the peer professional network for the SRF II level.
- Strong skills in quantitative data analysis.
- Demonstrated ability to perform critical analyses of own and others' research.
- Sustained and consistent excellent publication record in peer-reviewed journals.
- Demonstrated leadership skills and experience building and managing teams.
- Demonstrated leadership in developing global research programs with policy recommendations.
- Demonstrated experience in effective interactions in a multicultural setting with researchers, policymakers, donors, and civil society, facilitating research impact and capacity strengthening.
- Ability to contribute to IFPRI's overall institutional value through participation and support for organization-wide programs and activities.
- Willingness to travel extensively as required.
- Excellent written and spoken English communication skills, with demonstrated excellence in written and oral presentations.
- Demonstrated computer literacy (PC and Microsoft Applications).
- Proven record of fundraising success for broad and complex programs and projects.
- Proficiency in a second language of the U.N. system.
- Dietary assessment and analysis expertise.
- Experience with qualitative assessment methods and associated analytic techniques and software.
The employee will sit in an upright position for a long period of time, lift between 0-10 pounds, and have close visual acuity to perform activities such as preparing and analyzing data and figures, transcribing, viewing computer terminals, and extensive reading.
